Unless he's out of form after time out but the rest, in so far as recuperating post operatively is a rest, should do him good.

His denials are dodgy. Good point that this may change things though.

Are Broad and Morgan the only England players likely to be involved in the IPL now?

Not as dodgy as the excuses some people are already lining up.

Apparently KP is on his way home. Time for Morgan?

If he's fit enough. Alternatively we could bring in a specialist opener. Davies, anyone?

The key word is "could". They've just mentioned it in the Sky highlights and say it is an unconfirmed report and hope to bring us more news later.

I think he will. When I first heard the hernia story yesterday I did wonder whether he would last the tournament. England need to get the replacement right though if he does. Will it be someone to open or will they push Bell/Bopara up and bring in Morgan?

Can't open the link - is he going to South Africa because he is fed up, bored, runless, retiring? Or all four?

Morgan would be the best bet but that will involve a reshuffle of the order. Any chance we can find an injury for Colly too and get Rashid out there?

I can't see a specialist opener coming in, really, unless Davies is picked out of leftfield. Therefore if Morgan is fit he'd come in and Bell would open, I think.

Why not Tredwell for an injury? Colly has at least been adjudged (wrongly I'd say but still) worth starting games.

The loss of KP like this will certainly be a welcome addition to the range of excuses England will now be able to trot out, when required.

Ding dong the witch is dropped
The witch is dropped ETC

The wicked witch of the south (Africa) is dropped .This injury is just an excuse to hide the fact he has been sent home .Its not before time that the management have said enough is enough and got rid of this preening let down .

The team will now start to play with passion and no little skill.Mark my words we will reach the final

Given Pietersen's lack of success in ODI cricket in the last two years England will arguably be stronger now. However, they will have to re-jig the order. I suspect Prior will open the batting from now on with Morgan slotting in at 5.

Bell or Bopara to open, surely. Wouldn't have Prior anywhere near it.
