As chin says, not entirely a surprise. Good catching from SA this morning.

Morkel actually looked a bit threatening early on even when he was going for runs but in their opening spell they got pasted a bit. Good performance by Morkel to come back and wipe them out.

Spinners were steady but would struggle against the best teams. The attack still looks best when they have three seamers, Kallis and a spinner. If Duminy was in it would give them more options.

Hence my earlier comment about SA's choice of spin twins. Obviously a South African team will always look better with 3 front line seamers but if the pitch is such that the 3rd seamer is going to be ineffective, they might as well choose a spinner like Botha that can bore the batsmen out (which seems to be what happened here).

Smith declares SA 450 ahead with Kallis and Amla filling their boots accordingly. Think this game will be over by lunch tomorrow if not before.

Looks, like the other two tests to be heading for a draw. The lack of penetration in SA's attack is compromising them, though Amla, Kallis and Boucher putting down catches hasn't helped.

Pakistan just have to avoid imploding!

Could be set for an interesting finale here with the Pakistani batsmen settled and batting sensibly against an impotent looking SA attack.

Good to see Younis back in the runs, I thought he might have lost it after a long time in the wilderness. Kim and ddb will be extra pleased.

why is it that I always find South Africa depressing to watch?
The commentary team don't help, but theres an indefinable air of dourness about them.
Probably just me.

Well unless you are from Warwickshire and are turned on by non-spinning slow left armers spearing it outside leg stump, you are hardly going to be enthralled watching them bowl in Asia. If you have a slow, low flat surface, you can go along way to at least limiting their quicks if the ball doesn't even offer much in the way of reverse swing. That said, should SA strike, there is a chance like last innings the quicks could castle that long tail.

South Africa are only one bowler short of a decent attack aren't they.
Steyn and Morkel are ace, Kallis is a decent fourth / fifth bowler (better than collingwood).

No they are two short. A proper third seamer (in all conditions) and a spinner who does more than just contain. Perhaps Parnell will come through for them which would lighten a horrific load on the two high class opening bowlers. Kallis has been a decent bowler but now at the end of his useful bowling career he only weighs (pun intended!) in with a few overs here and there.

's bin a while since they had a really good spinner.

Pakistan needing 6 an over now of the last 24, can't imagine they'll get near that if the South African fielders flee to the boundary, but Younis Khan seems to be having a wack all the same.

Agree, Kallis is only good for a few overs here and there to help rotate the bowlers. In these type of conditions you can expect a dour performance as SA never has a quality spinner and the pacemen are made to toil.

Mind you, the bowlers are toiling all over the planet these last few days.

Had Kallis and Boucher pouched those catches, especially the keeper's regulation one, they could have forced a win despite the limited attack. Fielding lapses are crucial in these conditions.

Last 10 ovs 44/0 RR 4.40

Another 10 like that would leave 100 odd off 13 - too many..

With SA looking really fatigued, they could step up the pace and see what happens.

Interesting to note that the commentators thought that Smith could have declared earlier.

Pk should have a dash for say 2 wickets at least - not many better chances to win a test...

Depends on what the odds are and who's got money on what doesn't it? Surely no-one can be taking this match seriously as a sporting contest?
