or Root - from Cricinfo Root said. "The way he has conducted himself for the whole trip has been outstanding. I can see a big progression in his game and the way he went about those T20s in an England shirt shows he is not going to back down from any challenge. He has bowled well when he has had the opportunities on this trip."

In his Guardian report, Vic Marks says Crane could give England’s attack “a lift”, while acknowledging it has “been a long tour”.

My verdict:
Batting: Cook (ave. 47): nice innings but where were you the rest of the time? Root (47): FFS just stay in longer. Malan (43): well done sir. Bairstow (34): flatters to deceive. the rest (Vince, Stoneman, Ali): pants. Bowling: Anderson (3.4 wickets per match): better than the rest. Overton (3): might do well on juicy pitches. the rest (Woakes 2.5, Broad 2, Curran 1, Crane 1, Ali 1, Ball 1): pants. Overall: Cook 4/10 Stoneman 2 Vince 2 Root 4 Malan 5 Bairstow 3 Ali 1 Woakes 2 Broad 2 Curran 1 Crane 2 Ball 1 Anderson 4 Overton 3 |

4 is a bit harsh on Jimmy. Otherwise you weren't far off Dobell's ratings for cricinfo - you were more generous to Moeen than he was.

"0.5
Moeen Ali (179 runs at 19.88; 5 wickets at 115) He turned up on time and always wore the right kit but that was about as good as things got for Moeen. Unable to contribute with either bat or ball, Moeen had a horrible series and was probably fortunate to retain his place. "

I hoped we have moved beyond arguing about who is the tallest dwarf.

Credit to Anderson this series. One of his better ones despite nowhere near his best figures. Always thought he had a tendency to go mia a bit when conditions were unfavourable. Though he stuck to it here and bowled quite well on some of the most unfavourable wickets he will ever see.
Pitch ratings. Gabba...2 WACA....3 Adelaide...5 MCG...-10 SCG...2 CA have got to do something about our pitches. They were generally dull, lacked any pace or bounce, apart from a little bit at the WACA. Gave the bowlers nothing much, didn't seem great to bat on either, nor was it great to watch. Suppose they will say they all went to 5th day with only one draw, but surely some excitement could be a good thing. Only way to get that is to give the bowlers something to work with. If matches don't go the distance on our normal style wickets, who cares.

You're probably not wrong.
And the more I think about it, the fact it was the 2 London grounds in 2015 that offered up the best for batting and thus guaranteeing 4 days of revenue is probably not a complete coincidence either. |
