Shhh, don't spoil their daydream that Root is the best batsman in the world, and making pretty little 50s yet nothing of match shaping substance is just nice and fine, with reality and facts.

Who's saying that?

I was actually surprised by Root's record.

Since making his debut (in 2012), he's made a score of at least 180 every year. He's obviously capable of scoring big, so it'll be a case of just doing it more often - in particular away from home where his average is good (he avearges 50+ in both SA and India), but he needs to increase the number of match defining innings.

He's just turned 27 and should be approaching his prime (at 27 Smith had 14 centuries to Root's 13). The question will be whether he too can step up like Smith and go on a tear and double the number of test tons over the next two years. Historically the odds are against him.

A bit misleading citing this statistic without providing the full context.

Yes, when Smith turned 27 he had 14 centuries, only one more than Root's 13.

But when he turned 27, he'd also played a mere 75 innings, whereas Root had already racked up 117. In other words, at 27, Smith was scoring a century every 5.4 innings. At 27, Root was scoring a century every 9 innings.

That doesn't necessarily negate the gist of your argument though - and your conclusion, that it is extremely unlikely to happen, sounds about right too.

Jason Roy has a fair chance of adding to his tally today.

Was just looking at his record trying to remember if he had turned a corner, but looks more like stuck on a roundabout.

He scored his last ODI hundred in his 24th innings (out of 48), but this is his third consecutive fifty which follows on from scores of 17, 0, 20, 1, 8, 4, 1, 13, and 4.

Seems like he likes the aussies though, his previous two knocks against them were 4 and 4, but he has two thirties and two sixties in his other innings against them, and only his 31 off 32 balls missed out being at an SR of 100+ against them.

Nope. Root on the other hand unlikely to convert.

Simon Wilde has done a piece apparently, essentially about Alastair Cook and pointing out his lack of overall tons since July 2013 and that the only time he has scored tons is on shirt fronts. He then goes on about the stream of criticism that Root has got for not converting since the UAE series. All I can say is that they are far too late to the party. This thread will be one year old on Saturday!

Although he's been away from test cricket for a couple of years and his 80 may well help SA get a decisive lead now....................

Perhaps South Africa have a specific batting target for unconverted 50s?

And looks like South Africa will win the match despite India having the centurion. Perhaps Jock can explain.
