Disappointing that England folded for just 403 after the Malan/Bairstow partnership was broken but it's still a good total.

Overton is a find, not express pace but bowls good areas with some extra bounce from his height and has been rewarded with 2 wickets.

The pitch is starting to play some tricks now so it's not that easy for batting, get Smith out soon and Australia could fold.

How did Anderson bowl with the new ball ? Better length or same old.

Overton with the wickets - would be fascinated to see the pitch maps -is it due to a fuller length ?

If they continue at this run rate Smith won't have to bat much longer.

Yeah they should be bowling pace from both ends, Ali bowling his trundlers is taking the pressure off.

Crazy stuff.

That's why England need to get Smith out soon, he could rack up a ton very quickly here if they keep bowling rubbish.

Think it was about a minimum if England seriously want to try and win. I said yesterday (elsewhere) I can't see the aussies getting less than 350, at the moment that looks about right if not more.

Did wonder maybe an hour ago if England shouldn't try their best spinner, Root.... Would have thought Broad might be the likeliest to do damage, but he's actually being somewhat expensive and that too often preys on the mind of the captain(s)

Ali bowling tidy nothings may only go at 2-3 an over, but it may well turn (excuse the pun) out to be what I call 'free runs', that is economy has only theoretical use to those who believe it somehow creates wickets at the other end. Funny how it's a pressure that doesn't bring the creator the wickets..........

I wouldn't mind but I haven't seen a ball turn in all the bits I've watched. Even Khawaja can play non-spinning spin.

Smith's bat always looks twice as wide as everyone else's. Oh dear now a missed chance.

A bookie must have paid Root for Khawaja to score a 50.

Maybe this is a story England could use to wind Lyon up?

Malan was a very silly boy. They should have been declaring for 500+ around about now.

Yeah Smith has brought it back to par now with a quickfire 50.

England need to get him out soon or they will be on the back foot again.

I've said it before but England lack that express pace bowler that can unsettle the Aussie batsmen with sheer pace and bounce like the Aussie quicks can.

What they would give right now for a Steve Harmison, Devon Malcolm or even a Bob Willis. a few guys capable of knocking someone's block off.

Steve Harmison averaged 51 in Australia from 10 matches. Not sure he'd be much help.

Yeah he was mostly terrible here.

Like Devon Malcolm he was hit and miss but he could at least bowl some lethal deliveries at times.

I saw Alex Tudor bowl live at the WACA in 1998 and he had some serious pace.

He was on the wrong end of it though when he got cleaned up by Brett Lee at the WACA 4 years later, pretty much stuffed his career which was a shame.

There are three inevitable things in life, death, taxes and Steve Smith converting a start into a hundred.

Just nothing in the attack when the ball is soft. To be fair the Aussies were the same with the older ball but managed to shoot through the tail, which England might struggle with (assuming they get to the tail). Could be a man down now too.
