Turn on the TV to hear a refrain of God Save Your Queen. What a tedious bunch the Barmy Army are.

I don't see what all the hoo ha was about with the Stoneman dismissal, it seemed pretty obvious that it could only have hit the top glove to me and he knew he had gloved it.

Hit the glove for sure, could see it on the replay.

Need to be aiming at 400+ but that leaves a lot of it for Malan, Bairstow, Ali and Woakes to do.

Whilst the mainstays of the batting have hardly shone this series, I had a look at how Malan, Stoneman and Vince are doing overall because none has a hundred to their name yet.

Malan* : 13 inns, 342 runs @ 28.50 (HS 65, 50 x3)
Vince : 16 inns, 339 runs @ 21.19 (HS 83, 50 x1)
Stoneman : 10 inns, 310 runs @ 34.44 (HS 56, 50 x3)

*as at Malan 45no

Hardly inspiring or enough to compensate an out of sorts Cook, Root not exactly firing and the whole side limping to inadequate totals. You'd hope for batsmen entering double figures' worth of innings they'd have a big fifty minimum to their name not 56 and 65. Stoneman I guess at least gives some kind of stability at the top of the order, 34 average being better than the 30 or less from the multiple previous partners to Cook.

I fear though that Malan, Bairstow and the rest of the order may just delay the inevitable and it shows why Root is reluctant to bat first even when it's the right thing to do - he knows this kind of struggle is all too possible.

He may have redeemed himself a little from not batting last time out, but not enough. The shuffle of the middle order in fear of the Lyon seems to have been nervous nellying for nothing, mixing up left and right hand combinations is handy (excuse the pun) but with so many lefties in the order you can't guarantee it won't be the righties getting out when you don't want it. Still they'll feel vindicated here.

They won’t be singing that in 20 years time I guarantee it.

Another rubbish performance by England. And with no bowling threat to mention, this game will be over by lunch on the fourth day.

Can’t see our bowlers pitching many up on this deck - Broad will be trying to bounce them out like he is still 21.

No mission, and the next wicket will be followed by a lower order tumble.

It's not the national anthem as such, it's substituting 'our' for 'your" in the opening line as a means of winding up the Aussies. Funny the first couple of times, about twenty years ago, but old and tedious now.
