Average first innings score at the SCG is 313 I read somewhere *. So we have done reasonably well in spite of ourselves.

* Anyone have the stats at hand to confirm this?

I don't think Bancroft will be on the plane to South Africa.

Great start from Broad clean bowling Bancroft for a duck.

That might be the end of Bancroft's short lived test career.

Well yeah, if he can't score runs at home against an underwhelming English pace attack, what sort of misery will South Africa inflict upon him?

I had a brief glance. Aus usually score 500+ declared in recent years in their first innings so the opposition must not be pulling their weight in that regard.

I did a quick tally of the last tests since 1996. There were 23 test matches and the average came out to 359. (rounded)

The highest was India’s 705-7 in 2004.

Ali not looking threatening again, even against a spin bunny in Khawaja, time to give Crane a crack.

As I speak Crane into the attack.

Aside from the first long hop, pretty solid first over. Don't think it'll be a Kerrigan esque disaster at least anyway.

Just seems like things are drifting to an inevitable Warner ton half century here.

You just feel a Smith ton is inevitable here.

Anderson did well to prize Warner out with a clever off cutter but getting through Smith is going to be a lot tougher.

England are still clueless about how to get him out and are just hoping he makes a mistake, if he doesn't it will probably be another ton and an Australian lead.

What's Crane playing at by continually aborting his delivery stride?

Looking pretty grim for England. Smith isn't going to get out. The 'spin twins' have 0/109 between them and Curran is a glorified t-20 bowler. I don't see how Aus don't get a lead of 150-200 runs tomorrow. Only Anderson and Broad are test standard.

So the specialist spinner is no better than the part timer but is a significantly worse batsman?

Ah yes, if all else fails draw conclusions from a study where N = 1. Or in this case, N = about 0.1.

May need a tad more time to make such a statement. Deja vu series this..Smith unmovable and hope on permanent hold.

Never too early to knee jerk - if you compare their first balls each then Mo is clearly better.

We won't be bowling last!

Bancroft is going to fit in brilliantly at Somerset. Has there ever been a more underwhelming ashes winning overseas player?

If we'd written a script for this Test, based on the series to date, I reckon it would have played out very faithfully. I'm pleased I didn't waste my money buying coverage of what must rank as one of the least inspiring Ashes of my time (for which I hold England responsible). But, hey ho....less than 100 days til the new county season.
