Bit a a gem from Stokes already here, although I'll revise that opinion if he's out before he gets at least 70, given how good a batting track this is. I like the way he's taken a toll of all their bowlers, including the ones Clarke relies on to tie an end up. If we can hit Watson and Lyon with relatively little risk, as Stokes has so far, it makes it very difficult to captain against us and will wear their three proper quick bowlers out if Clarke has to keep turning to them. If we're not still batting well into tomorrow's afternoon session then we'll have wasted the chance to give them a bit of a knackering though.

Warner gets a bowl now. That seems a bit too funky.

We are going to have well over 300 here by the time the new ball arrives. I love the positive scoring rate by England, thanks to the perfect partnership between Ballance and Root, which as others have stated really sets up the game.

Australia will undoubtedly feel challenged to show that anything England can do, so can they. This will give our bowlers some chances to probe and attack in return. We will need to hang on to our chances when they do come along.

Bairstow looks to be next cab off the rank but we already have too many players we'd like to bat at 5 and not enough we'd like to bat at 3 or 4. Root could move up to 3 (with Ballance going to 4) or 4 to bring Bairstow in at 5.

Great innings from Root but that's a very loose drive to expose the lower middle order to the new ball. I suppose he saw that it was wide but it wasn't full enough to be percentage. Looking at the replay he really didn't get his front foot across much at all either.

Shame that Root would fall just before the new ball like that, but he had done a beautiful job, so no quibbles. Stokes and Buttler, a dream combination if they can crank it up.

Oops, it was not to be and we may be struggling for 350 now.

Yeah, good recovery from 3 down early but now struggling, especially with that tail. Saying that, I think there's more hope of Broad rediscovering form than Bell and it's not like Ali is proper lower order either.

If England's lower order gets blown away they are going to end up with a seriously inadequate total. Having won the toss and batted on this surface I would think they would have been looking to post at least 500.

Key stand here now...350 total could be well short.

Not quite looking like enough here but this is where you see the value of a real batsman at 8, or at least you do if Moeen survives the day and adds tomorrow.

Lame dismissal there with a couple of overs only left.

Do you think Broad will get much on length?

Kind of predictable score this..not bad ..not good.. poor shot just now to give Oz the edge but until they bat it's hard to call. Need a good 50 from Moeen and Broad to stick around.

This pitch is going to give variable bounce, I think. If we can get 400 then it is game on.

Extra half hour taken and two overs short. That is so bad.

Wicket less day for Mitch. Love it. Let's hope he has a long and torturous summer.

Cheers Brad, is all I can say. Interestingly poised and of course we don't know what this score is worth until the Aussies bat. Pitch is unsurprisingly shocking.
