For the day/night games

In announcing the squad for England’s NatWest T20 International series against South Africa, the selectors have confirmed that several all-format players have been rested to allow them to gain experience of playing with the pink Dukes balls that will be used for the historic Investec Test against West Indies at Edgbaston in August.

That means England’s new Test captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow will both be available for Yorkshire’s Division One Championship fixture against Surrey at Headingley.

Jimmy Anderson is on course to make his comeback from a groin injury for Lancashire against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Alastair Cook, who has already played such a significant part in Essex’s successful return to the top tier, will face the new pink ball in their home game against champions Middlesex at The Cloudfm County Ground in Chelmsford.

And in Division Two, Moeen Ali is set to face England team-mates Ben Stokes and Mark Wood when Worcestershire play Durham at the Emirates Riverside – while Jake Ball can rejoin Stuart Broad in the Nottinghamshire attack against promotion rivals Kent at Trent Bridge.

Play in all nine of the matches will begin at 2pm on Monday June 26, with a late lunch interval at 4pm, and tea scheduled at 6.40pm, although it could be later depending on the over rate.

Specsavers County Championship, Day-Night Round, 26-29 June

Division One

Essex v Middlesex
Hampshire v Somerset
Warwickshire v Lancashire
Yorkshire v Surrey

Division Two

Durham v Worcestershire
Glamorgan v Derbyshire
Northamptonshire v Leicestershire
Nottinghamshire v Kent
Sussex v Gloucestershire

England stars return to County action

Tom Westley, Chris Woakes and Toby Roland-Jones are among England stars who will be available to return to their County sides.

Tom Westley is set to rejoin Essex in their quest for the Specsavers County Championship this week – and that means a likely encounter with England team-mate Chris Woakes in the televised game against Warwickshire that starts at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

Westley has been made available to Essex for their remaining three fixtures as they aim to become champions for the first time since 1992 – they have a third consecutive away match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl starting next Tuesday, before ending the season at home to Yorkshire from September 25.

Woakes is available for Warwickshire’s game against Essex, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Cricket, before linking up with the England squad for the Royal London One-Day Series against West Indies.

Alastair Cook, who has played in seven of Essex’s 11 Championship matches so far this season, will not play at Edgbaston as he takes a break following the Investec Test series.

Other England players available to return to their counties in this week’s round of Championship fixtures are Mark Stoneman, Toby Roland-Jones and Mason Crane. All three have been made available for the rest of the season, for Surrey, Middlesex and Hampshire respectively.

Dawid Malan will also be available for Middlesex’s last two fixtures, against Lancashire at Lord’s and Somerset in Taunton, although not for this week’s game against Hampshire in Uxbridge as he heads to Durham for the NatWest International T20 against West Indies next Saturday.

Similarly, Liam Dawson and Chris Jordan, who have also been selected for the T20 squad but not for the ODI series, will miss this week’s fixtures but are then available to return for Hampshire and Sussex respectively for the remaining two matches of the season.

Jimmy Anderson will take a break after his record-breaking achievements at Lord’s, and will not be available to play in any of Lancashire’s remaining three matches to allow him to begin a slow build-up to the Ashes tour. Lancashire will also lose Jos Buttler for their remaining three fixtures because of his inclusion in England’s T20 and ODI squads.

Stuart Broad’s availability to Nottinghamshire will be determined after the results of scans on the heel problem that affected him during the Lord’s Test, and the Division Two leaders will definitely lose Alex Hales and Jake Ball for their last two matches because of their inclusion in England’s T20 and one-day squads.

Yorkshire lose Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid and David Willey for their remaining three matches, as well as Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, while Surrey lose Tom Curran and Jason Roy.

Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali will take a week’s break before joining England’s one-day squad.
------
November 16th is the start of the warm up games in Australia so some are getting two months rest. If Broad has a heel problem why not a long rest for him?

It means Broad will play no part in England's upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, and he will miss the rest of Nottinghamshire's County Championship season as they chase the Second Division title.

Is Cook still under contract or did he sign a new one before deciding to retire?
Does the ECB expect him to change his mind? Lucky they agreed to his availability to Essex given the contract signed with Essex.

You must have been looking at an old post. I think he signed a contract with Essex before announcing his retirement. His contract was running out this year.

Alastair Cook will not take part in the remaining two County Championship games for Essex this season, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday (September 12).

Oops! Didn’t realise it was dated April 2018 referring to the start of this season.

Saw there were new posts on this thread and eyes were drawn to the Cook one.

It's an interesting point you raise though.

Essex have shelled out for Murali Vijay when they wouldn't have had Cook been available and it's not like he needs to be saved for a winter tour.
