Enough to give him an average of 20

Was responding to a post saying that Root, Stokes and Ali were the stand outs. It was too long to quote.

I was suggesting that Root has actually had a relatively poor 12 months

That's fair. Certainly Anderson looks to have had a better one statistically.

Replacing Finn with TRJ would make sense so it won't happen!

You can't keep on paying 600k per annum to a player like Mark Wood who is hardly ever fit.

Especially when despite his talent he's rarely looked threatening when playing for England. If he was injury prone but ripped through international sides when fit then he'd have a much better case.

Central contracts to be announced on Wednesday but could be delayed because of the Stokes affair.

The ODI stats for the last period -

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng...s;type=batting

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng...s;type=bowling

Outstanding from Root, Bairstow, Plunkett and Ali. Rashid. All from Yorks.

Ali's not really from Yorks, but never mind. He's partly a spin bowler, so doesn't count anyway.

Only eight players thought worthy of a test match central contract this time, and a couple of those quite fortunate, is a rather sorry state of affairs.

Who?
I think everyone of those 8 deserves their central contract.

I would say that Woakes is lucky. On last year's contract he was rubbish whenever he was fit, which wasn't very often. Obviously promising with the bat, though.

Fair enough. Contracts, though, are usually awarded not only in recognition of past performance but also in anticipation of future form (and other factors, e.g. injury proneness and personal conduct).

Taking into account those awarded central contracts, to say that two could be considered lucky may be an understatement.

I'd agree that Woakes getting his test central contract is a touch fortunate, and I'm one of his more staunch defenders. At the moment he needs to prove both that he can bowl consistently at the pace and quality he was last summer (well, not THAT good all the time, which would make him a legendary player - but at the very least something like it most of the time) and that he can perform away from home, although that latter issue also applies to pretty much every England player to some degree.

If Woakes can get back up above 85mph regularly then he's more than worth a place in the team, and giving him a full contract should mean they can keep full control of his workload, so it makes sense. Another year like this one though and he will lose it.

Ali has been England's shining star this year, both on and off the field.
