Thanks, really interesting this - mainly because of the two stints Otis Gibson had as bowling coach and the vastly different results Anderson and Broad had in the two difference stints.

I think Broad improved under Saker. His bowling dry method helped Broad, after he was used as the enforcer. Now Stokes has sort of got that role.

The difference between bowled and lbw for some of those bowlers is interesting. Statistical anomaly or is there some other factor behind this?

Wood's bowled seems ridiculously high.

Well Wood is the fastest of the lot. A lot of played ons? Don't know why a low percentage of lbws.

Yes, the extra pace leading to a few more play-ons is the reason that occurred to me, but my impression is that play-ons aren't common enough to account for that much of a difference.

I think a bowler's reputation plays a part. Finn is tall and will be expected to generate bounce, so I suspect he gets fewer lbw decisions from umpires. Wood has a reputation of being skiddy though which should him get lbws.

Any other theories out there?

Some interesting stats there TYS both ground level and bowlers.

Perth looks like a bowlers graveyard since they changed the wickets and despite the SCG having a reputation for a spinners wicket Lyon has awful stats there.

With regards to LBW Ball is a pretty tall bowler who gets plenty of bounce, probably not as much as Finn but he has a very high LBW percentage.

No bowler took the edge more times in 2017 than Anderson, who did it on 238 occasions.

Chris Silverwood will be England's new bowling coach starting in New Zealand. He will be Anderson's final bowling coach after Cooley, Shine, Donald, Saker, Gibson, Bond and Collingwood.

Likely 6 fast bowlers for the tour to be announced on 10 Jan

Anderson
Broad
Roland-Jones
Woakes
Wood
Overton

I am sure Finn would be fit enough by 22 March but as he is not selected for any Lions tours beforehand will miss out. I have a feeling that Stokes will be selected instead of Overton though. Wood will get ODI matches to get up to speed.

Cricinfo

It is likely that Ben Stokes will be named in the squad. But that does not mean he is likely to make the tour. His name will appear, as it did in the limited-overs squad, as a legal nicety to ensure that the ECB is not seen to be prejudicing the on-going investigation into his actions outside a Bristol nightclub in September. Realistically it seems most unlikely he will make the tour.

Toby Roland-Jones, who will go on the Lions' tour to the Caribbean, is the likely beneficiary. Mark Wood and Craig Overton, who will not be considered for selection in Sydney as he recovers from a cracked rib, also look likely to make the New Zealand tour, with Jake Ball in danger of missing out. Steven Finn, who underwent surgery on his knee having returned home from the Ashes tour after a few days, is not thought to have regained the fitness required for selection.

Er, does this mean that the ECB prejudiced the on-going investigations by leaving him out of the Ashes squad?

Angus Fraser picks his 5 bowlers to watch in 2018

1 Archer
2 J Overton
3 Bess (plus, he can bat a bit)
4 Garton
5 Helm

Re: Archer - I am sure the ECB are trying to what they can do to reduce his qualifying period to before 2022.

I think

1 Archer
2 Tongue
3 Bess
4 Stone
5 Mahmood
