There are 34 pen pictures on the door of the England dressing room at the SCG to identify all those allowed in. That’s three for every member of the match XI. They include a team liaison officer, a soft-tissue masseur and various analysts, but no specialist pace bowling or spin bowling coach for an Ashes Test.

No nightwatchman coach ?

Was last night a sacking offence for the head coach ?

Surely the Captain should carry the buck (if anyone does)?

Tbf it was probably the last thing on Root's mind when he was walking off the field.

So Bayliss is only here for the ODI World Cup and then is off.

An admission that the ECB couldnt give a toss about test cricket in the meantime.

Only themselves to blame if test grounds are empty.

I thought they said Bayliss would be here for the next home Ashes series.

They did. He'll be seeing out his contract, but not renewing (he said):

Seems as if Bayliss is ready to hand over the T20 coaching now to Farbrace. Wonder what Strauss will do. Why not the Tests as well?

“When I was a number two, years ago, a bloke said to me the role of the number two is to make the number one look good. I think he’s done a good job in that respect.”

Just a coincidence that Farbrace was not on the T20 leg of the tour?

England are now a 50 over team that play the other formats on their days off.

All about hosting the WC in 2019.

Strauss is a dolt.

And as we saw today sometimes they take a day off when they're playing 50 overs, too!

Was there something specific you noticed about the effort, prompting the comment? Other reports are of getting beaten in a close game by a good team, possibly with a couple of miscues proving decisive.

Stokes’ return was mostly a positive factor after his long layoff, it appears. The game could’ve tipped either way at the end, with the dew under the lights maybe an advantage to the batting team.

The batting coach is surely on thin ice after a display like that.

Plus, since Cook was made to ditch his mentor as England batting coach, has any England batsman other than Bairstow actually improved?

Fortunately for the batting coach he has a water-tight alibi as he was in the Caribbean, leading the South to their first ever defeat against the North. Should he have been in NZ instead?

Was he in Australia for the Ashes? If he was but wasn't for NZ is that a sign of complacency?

Strauss is stepping down because his wife has cancer. Some of us have been in the same position.
Flower will continue to cover until a permanent successor is named (probably himself). That's a worry for me.
