Me - nearly 2 years since he scored a test ton or took a test fivfer. His bowling average is rising and his batting average is falling.

During that time our results have been at best above average.

Time for a fresh approach and aim above mediocre.

His cumulative batting average - after 5 tests was 37, been falling ever since.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng... ew=cumulative

His cumulative bowling average - both strike rate and average heading the wrong way.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng... ew=cumulative

His record against Sri Lanka our next opponent ?

3 wickets for 181 runs..

The penny will drop soon I hope.

I've highlighted the part where your argument consistently hits a wall.

Ah yes the old trope that young cricketers who aren't given a chance at test level can't possibly be better than make-weights in the current team.

Fine - if you are happy for us to bumble along the middle of the test rankings then its an ok stance to take.

I'm sure Slop's quite happy for England to bumble around in the middle of the test rankings!

Yeah, that's not the trope. Even you aren't simply suggesting selecting someone on the back of them being young. That's when the wall comes into play.

Names please.

As a number 8 batsman, Ali is better than mediocre. His bowling is just okay but I think it has potential to improve. I watch quite a bit of county cricket, and I would say that I've only seen two better bowlers than him: James Tredwell and Simon Kerrigan. For different reasons, neither of those guys are going to be picked.

Mixed fortunes for our spinners today.

Moeen had a bad time of it, but not as bad as the once touted Adam Riley. Crane and Kerrigan had tidy, if unspectacular, days. The cupboard remains empty.

Who is the leading wicket taker who is a spinner so far? I imagine Rashid is near the top of the list with Patel.

Yes but don't forget that doesn't take into account the most important stat for an English spinner; their batting average.

What about their economy rates, hey Jock?

In seriousness, Ali has been pretty terrible with the ball this season so far which has to bring his continued selection for england as an all rounder into doubt.

He isn't much improved since his debut really. In fact that Durban test apart, I'd say he's regressed.
