Guess it's apt that in this Summer of half centuries, England would score their highest total of all time without a century (but six fifties).

Which one of them didn't survive a drop/failed review/out off a new ball?

Guess the player?

This player had the ups and downs that you might expect of a young player getting to grips with international cricket, nevertheless had a health 5 centuries after 18 games. However, in his next 28 games by the time he was maturing he would score 12 50s and only go on to 100+ on 3 occasions.

Are we talking about an England player in tests? Because I can't find anyone who fits those criteria.

I assumed you were talking about all games in a career, otherwise I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

I had done similar with Cook and Pietersen in highlighting marked chunks when both players had an extended period of not scoring many centuries but overall provided ok returns but marked by a large number of 50s. I was simply looking for the most marked 50 scoring period of this player's career. If anything this player, and Ali has twigged that it is Bell, scored less 50s in that time than I anticipated as I recalled it as the era when so often he would look pretty good but throw it away when well set. Perhaps I should have looked at 20s to 40s as well!

I thought the title of the thread gave it away! I think you could have reduced the matches by one and got a 100 less as well.

I had a look at other players records at times where they didn't convert tons so well yet I hadn't done an analysis of Bell at any point. This selected period dates from the start of the notorious 2006/7 Ashes series where Bell batted quite well but didn't convert up until early 2009 where he had got dropped after really not kicking on at all and going through a bit of a slump. If anything I could have probably knocked off the last few games but in some respects it would be overdoing the 'selected period'.

I had an initial suspicion that Bell must be involved here but as I misunderstood the criteria the facts didn't seem to fit. It's reassuring to know that nothing ever changes on Cricket 247.

From ODIs:

Root: 10 hundreds 23 fifties

Bell: 4 hundreds 34 fifties

He's got a way to go yet!
