I feel inclined to introduce a new rule, automatically barring medium-pacers from this thread.

Or Briggs for Sussex which is ridiculous considering they're playing 3 seamers with hardly any experience and getting smashed round the park at 5 an over as a result. Thank god for Magoffin.

Livingstone makes a belligerent half century while batting with the tail having stayed solid while the rest of the side collapsed around him. With Hameed going to a short delivery, he's certainly not done himself any harm here. Other batsmen unlikely to get in the side but harbouring aspirations to do so are also among the runs, with half-centuries for Gubbins and Vince and Robson closing in on a century. Must be something in the air, maybe Ian Bell will make a delightful 42.

Also a breezy 50 for Moeen. Livingstone last man out for Lancs having made more than half the team total.

Sorry. I decided he was relevant because of his second place in his Lions tour batting averages and third for bowling. Plus a career first class average of 26 with ball (playing at that seamers paradise at Taunton) and 25 with bat.

Broad slapping some runs - he and Wessels both going at over a run a ball at the moment for Notts.

Rudyard Kipling springs to mind.

Somerset already 18/0!

Here in lies the England spin conundrum playing all the county cricket on seaming wickets in April will only make it worse.

Hameed seems to be having second season blues and may even play his way out of the test team. Livingstone must stand a decent shout at replacing Ali in the medium term. Short term I think Rashid will play in the first test, but could be at risk if he doesn't do well of not playing at Trent Bridge and being replaced by a batsman if it is a traditional seamers pitch.

Hameed looked in serene touch in the first week but both times got out a little cheaply. Not sure how many more CC games there are before tests start, because I'd think he's safe for now based on how highly everyone talks about him from the set up. If he isn't at his best then it certainly wouldn't be the worst bit of management to leave him out given his tender years.

No didn't even get an over. Or a run in the second dig.

Of course he didn't get an over, it's a crazy pitch where seamers skittled both sides for naff all.

New Road in April .... will be major surprise if any spinner gets an over. New Road makes Chester Le Street look a spin bowling dust bowl this time of year.

Young Delray Rawlins caught the eye with the under-19s over the winter but so far this summer has struggled. Not helped by batting at a position which Sussex fans think is ridiculous and in this game playing against world-class bowling.

It is a big set up from U19 to senior cricket, even if it's Division 2. Doesn't help playing in a struggling team either.

Hameed gone cheaply yet again to a short-ish ball yet again. Unless he sorts out that mode of dismissal there's no way he'll be much use against the Aussies.

Jennings, on the other hand, is really enjoying himself against Division 2 bowlers.

I think his runs against Notts were the important one for him. You'd hope he'd go big against some of the other attacks. 100 and a 50 in his first 2 tests and the man in possession you'd guess he's pretty safe.
