A good day but still plenty to do.

Good to see Cook back on form. How long sre we going to persevere with Vince?

Meh. Would've been nice to do it when it mattered.

Cook joins Sunil g as the only overseas player to have a test hundred on all major Ozzie test grounds. Legend.

On the plus side we're going to do something extremely hilarious to lose this game. So there is that to look forward to.

Yeah well obviously it would have been better if they produced these sorts of performances when the series was on the line but it's still a test match that counts in the record books and one that's still worth winning to avoid another whitewash.

They've at least shown their careers aren't done and dusted just yet like some people were claiming after the Perth test.

I'd be surprised if they aren't still around for the next Ashes series in England.

That calmness is one of the reasons Cook is a great test batsman that can bat for long periods but he probably wouldn't be much fun at parties.

After the Lord Mayor's show all of this, and I'm with Zebby that there is still the prospect of some highly imaginative way for England to lose this game.

I fear you're probably right - what price an Aussie first innings lead?

But on this pitch and with no Starc, there isn't anything to really worry the tail. I've thought all along that if you took out two of the Aussie bowlers you'd get an even contest, turns out it maybe just Starc.

I reckon even Moeen might get runs on this.

Great day at the MCG today after I let my wife have the ticket for Boxing Day (I took the young'un to Luna Park instead)

Last two days I've watched England in Tests, Cook has scored a ton. MCG today, Lord's vs NZ the last time. Might get to see a if the trend continues at Hagley Park in March.

England has the upper hand. Cook and Root bowled well. It does show though that with Starc out and Cummins ill, the attack looks limited.

Second MCG Test of 1974/5. Ashes already relinquished. Thommo was injured so didn't play, Lillee went crook early on. England piled them on with Denness making the highest score by an England captain in Australia. Just another 140, Joe.

Good to see an OK early performance, then again, it's happened in each of the previous matches but England have still found a way to collapse with both bat and ball. Plus, that century shouldn't paper over the cracks for Cook.

Anyway, should be an interesting 3rd day on a sluggish pitch (credit to JImmy and Broad for bowling well).

Is anyone prepared to go nuts and say we'll win this test?

I'd rather go for a night out with Andy Murray. What was that phrase? "A mood Hoover. "

Feel sorry for James Vince. King of the unfortunate dismissal.
