I'd imagine Sky etc want their money back - or another tour for free.

Money is not being wasted on these events, it is being earned. Without the England games this summer, English cricket, including Notts, would have faced a financial black hole. There certainly wouldn't be any money to give away. At the same time expecting players to go from this summer in a bubble straight into the IPL, then an England tour and then the BBL and then another tour, etc. is unrealistic. Unsurprisingly, it's becoming increasingly clear that to ask players to live repeatedly in a bio-bubble simply isn't mentally sustainable for them. |

Michael Vaughan in the Telegraph is kind of suggesting that England players are wimps for wanting to come home from S.Africa. Wonder what his attitude would have been if he’d been in such a situation in his own playing days.

I have some empathy with MPV's view. A tour was cancelled without anyone involved feeling poorly.

But people had tested positive. When this happens they have to self-isolate. This happened to my choir conductor 3 or 4 weeks ago. He said he had no symptoms but felt very tired. He’s now back taking rehearsals again on Zoom and hopefully is OK, but it was worrying at the time.

Saffer board calling England soft.
Judge Zak Yacoob, the chair of CSA's interim board, has suggested that there was "no justification" for England to abandon their tour of South Africa and defending the efficacy of the Covid protocols imposed by the board. Speaking in a virtual press conference on Thursday, Judge Yacoob said that he was "95% certain" that Sri Lanka would be arriving in South Africa next week ahead of their Test series, which starts December 26, and suggested that the 'Big Three' boards - the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB - act as "laws unto themselves". "What I want to negate is an idea that our provision of services was substandard and that there is any justification for the English saying they did not want to participate and go home," Judge Yacoob said. "The facts are that ultimately, they were negative. We have gone into or protocols and we think that our protocols have been very good. "There may have been an issue of psychological troubles. People may have felt nervous about false positives. Our position is that we do not wish to blame the English, but we wish to say absolutely and completely that any notion that they went away because it was in any way our fault, is completely wrong.

Sounds like an exercise in CYA. The protocols for maintaining a bubble are tricky. No wonder there would be a hiccup or two.
Look at the cruise to nowhere out of Singapore which just had to return a day early due to a positive test. Turns out that was ultimately shown to be a false alarm, yet all the passengers were massively disrupted. |

I'm pretty sure it was under his leadership that players started to be allowed to be at the birth of their kids and have wives and kids on tour, both of which were the right calls and now standard practice. If he was captain he wouldn't have done anything differently I'm sure, it's a shame he has departed from being the kind of clear thinking captain he was to the media idiot he is now.

This is a fizzer.
The South African and England test series are some of the best test series I've seen. They are talking about rescheduling Australia and South Africa tests in Perth. They should reschedule the England and South Africa tests in Perth, they would fill the stadium, a lot of Poms and Saffas here. |
