Bowling with the new ball https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...s;type=bowling He is right in that they are all opening bowlers and probably all want the new ball but Root doesn't give the opening bowlers long spells so first change will get the ball 9 overs old. A good time as the lacquer has worn off and it starts to swing. Another thing I find is that a longer spell is more likely to take wickets. Anderson usually gets 4 overs but when he has had a 6 over opening spell he gets wickets in the 5th and 6th over. Seen Broad given 3 overs spells. 2nd Test 1st innings his spells 5,3,3,3,2. 0 wickets. What is the point, he is just getting warmed up. McGrath has been known to bowl 12 over opening spells. He can't understand why our bowlers get such short overs. Although in Archer and Wood's case you would only want to give them 4 at the most. 90mph Feel that Wood can bowl short spells of 90+. Maybe Archer could do that if he was given 4 overs but once he has the ball in his hand Root gives him 7 or 8 overs Usually expect a 90mph bowler to average 88mph throughout the day like Lee and Steyn. Archer seems to not have one speed he bowls at. Through the over he bowls all sorts of different speeds. Maybe that's his variations. https://wisden.com/analysis/cricviz-...e-jofra-archer Last edited by 1000yardstare : 12th August 2020 at 14:02. |

Probably the proliferation of T20s make the faster bowlers feel the need to mix up their pace a lot.

I don't think England, or for that matter Archer himself, have quite worked out what type of bowler they want Archer to be. I'm not actually convinced that getting him to steam in for 4-over spells is the best use of him, I think he's a more skillful bowler than that.
Steyn varied his pace quite a bit. With the new ball at the start of the day, he might be bowling 83-4mph, but his most ferocious spells might come in the evening session with the old ball.

Broad’s average at Lord’s looks higher than I’d have thought. He must have taken a bit of tap from Australia etc in between skittling south Asian teams
