South Africa, usually a four test series. There used to be 4 match series v West Indies until 2009 and since then they are down to 3 tests. It should be said that England probably need a longer series over there because they have now lost 2 series and drawn 1 v them since the last victory in 2004, and arguably against sides no better than the one they did beat. The 2009 series was technically a 5 test series with an extra test scheduled after the original 2nd test at the Sir IVA Richards stadium was abandoned because of the run-ups.

Pakistan in England are also usually 4 Tests, although I was surprised to learn that England have never played a series of more than 3 Tests in Pakistan.

I think with some it varies on who is playing, so if two sides England usually play 2-3 Tests against one of the sides might get four........

windies used to be nailed on for four, struggle to get more than 2-3 now.

South Africa - 4 Tests, did play five between 95/96 and 04/05, but 4 in all but 1 (3 in 2012) since

Pakistan - 3-4 Tests, one of the more variable series length regular opponents, haven't played 5 since 1992

Sri Lanka - 3 Tests, all but 2 out of the last 10 series (2 Tests) have been 3
West Indies - 3 Tests, used to be 5 regularly, then 4 in the 2000s, but 4 in a row have been 3 Tests series

New Zealand - 2-3 Tests, played four in 1983 and 1999, but since 1983 have played three in 12 out of 16 series (75%)

Bangladesh - 2 Tests
Zimbabwe - 2 Tests



So basically the point was correct, England only play India and Australia in 5 Tests and only Australia have consistently played 5+ Tests. I'm surprised New Zealand only get 2-3, but I think a lot of it can depend on agendas with the balance of Tests vs ODIs and indeed T20Is, and who is playing ie if it is the Ashes you'd expect any other touring side to get 2 max, if a side who plays England in 2-3 Tests then another side who plays 2-4 Tests would also be scheduled, fairly logical in the era of up to 7 Tests a summer.


Here's a thought though, should Test sides consider playing eg triangular series in England or indeed just play in England with the prospects of a good crowd greater, especially with sizeable Indian, Pakistan, West Indian etc fans around........? I do hate it when people who make a life in this country continue to support other countries in sport, but what can you do eh

I was talking about the Aussies.

Still looks nailed on India v Australia at Lord's in 2021. I think it's straight after the IPL when players will have been wanting some rest.

Probably unless NZ can upset Australia this coming series. I would actually fancy our chances against India at Lords. The BCCI would probably react by insisting it be hosted in Mumbai for the foreseeable future thereafter.

I won't be so sure about either of our batting lineups at Lords to make much runs. Considering India too has a decent bowling attack these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a close contest.

Having said that, we don't have any home tests until 2021 or so, I guess, so you can expect some changes to the points table.

By the end of the SA series, England will have played 9 Tests for their 2 series. So 2 more than India have played for 2 series.

It's just hard to take seriously. Each Test should have equal weighting, with a bonus for winning a series (like the current rankings).
