England have a potentially more significant injury issue than that of Mark Wood for the tour of Sri Lanka with senior spinner Jack Leach dogged by a calf problem.

I really feel for Woody - since he came back he’s given 110 per cent. Terrible luck, but as a Lancs man, I hope Saqib Mahmood does well - he’s got plenty of pace and accuracy.

No moeen and no leach. Sheesh. That would be 36 (at 23) of the 56 wickets we took on the last tour of Sri Lanka. Ouch.

Dom Bess should be getting the call and it represents a great opportunity for him. I'd hope Rashid might be brought back, although he might be apt to struggle against strong players of spin.

Root appears likely to be bowling a fair few overs. Could Parkinson be ready for test cricket?

But Mahmood has an injury as well, reported unavailable for the Lions by the Lancs website.

Suspect he is going for experience not to play, just likely to make the injury worse in the nets and so not be available for Lancashire when the season starts.

Disappointing that Leach's fitness levels are so poor. Expect better from an international spinner.

The fact he has had the career he has with all of the issues he has faced shows how hard he works. It would have crushed a lesser man.

Bess is already in the squad.

Mo or Rashid would be the obvious ones. I doubt Parkinson would be very effective but you never know.

Have to question his commitment really. Can't he bowl 90mph non stop whenever Root tells him to?

Seems as if Leach doesn't have the best of luck with his health.

Not looking good with England 176-5. Root on 65* a few moments ago.

A bit of a middle order collapse, Root the mainstay of the innings.

Another inconsequential little thirty from Denly.

And Root out for 78. The only reason for not updating the PLF thread is that this isnít a first class match even if his very old habit is dying hard.

Buttler securing his place for the test series. Good to see. Jennings in at 8.

I assume the 4-day match next week will be first class. Seems excessive in this day and age to have two warmups for a two test series.
