Williamson is emblematic of NZ's test team as a whole. Fantastic at bashing minnows in familiar conditions but mediocre once the level goes up. Averages 41, 43 and 36 against Aus, Eng & India respectively, and away average falls to 42 which is the lowest of 'the big 4.' If the Kiwi's ever dare tour again, they may be in for a rude awakening.

As an equivalent, David Warner who has a similar number of test hundreds 24, and averages almost 50, which puts him just below Williamson, has an even more inferior record away against Eng, India & NZ.
Averages 26, 24 & 13 respectively, with NO centuries away against them, just 3 innings in NZ, 16 in India & 25 in England.

Just shows, that it's harder to score away for nearly everyone.

I would love NZ to play more tests, but it appears the Authorities there prefer the shorter format.

It's a pretty fair comparison actually, both tremendous bullies at home with contrasting averages abroad, with Williamson who averages 21 in SA, 27 in SL, 30 in Eng, 35 in Ind and 14 in his most recent series in Aus. To Warners credit he also open the batting and isn't shielded against the new ball.

If he smashes some runs against those three he might even be ready to face the almighty resurgent South Africa.

Everyone has a love in for the "plucky" Kiwis, for some reason. If I'd said something derisory about Australia or India, few here would've jumped to their defence, whether what I said was fair or not.

Who says they are "plucky"? I don't think sticking up for them against your critique qualifies as a "love in" -- just common sense really. They seem like a thoroughly decent bunch of chaps, even if Wagner does bowl too short. Naturally, slagging off Australia is OK because of the history (most users of this site are England fans I think) and because they are such hypocrites when it comes to the spirit of the game. India is a strange case, partly because their most vocal supporters on here seem to slag them off more than anyone else could anyway.

Williamson actually averages more against Australia in Australia than at home to them. He sadly hasn't played a test in England or India in the last 5 years.

I would like to see NZ play more and in particular longer series against Aus, Eng and Ind. Two test series are too short. The no.1 ranked side in the world are worthy of longer contests. Part of the challenge of test cricket is being worked out over a whole series - bowlers and captains trying to pick holes in a batsman's technique (think Broad v Warner) and batsmen getting on top of bowlers. It may be that bowlers given more time against Kane work him out or it could be the other way round. It diminishes cricket that we don't get to see such contests allowed to develop. I'd happily have fewer but longer series. The Ashes have certainly been diminished by how little time there is between series. Cricket needs time to breathe, for myths to grow.

NZ winning the 2nd test by an innings and 176 runs, Jamieson continuing his good bowling form with a 6'fer and 11 wickets for the match.

He was a deserving Player of the Match, Williamson would have been a deserving winner too for his double ton, he did get Player of the Series though.

Williamson is hardly shielded against the new ball, with how bad some of NZ's openers have been over his career he is basically opening anyway.

I agree that 2 test series are too short and if a series is locked at 1-1 there is no 3rd test decider, series should be 3 tests at least.

I would like to see NZ involved in more 4 or 5 test series but I can't see it happening even with us now being one of the test cricket heavyweights.

Of course as an Australian user of this site I would NEVER slag off England.

As far as this series is concerned, I have really enjoyed N.Z.'s play, their pace bowling stocks have never been better, Williamson is a great, the middle order and Watling are reliable, just not certain with their openers, or a decent spinner, it's not Santner.

Would like to see them in more 3 Test series as well.

The next scheduled test tour New Zealand have is either v India in the autumn or over here in Spring 2022. A whole heap of limited overs series, mostly at home and then tests at home v SL and SA in a year's time. Apart from playing us for three tests, all the other series are 2 tests.

The problem is, it's hard to take NZ seriously as a Test 'heavyweight' when they've reach their ranking from largely playing 2 Test series at home. Sri Lanka could probably be pretty close to doing that too.

Anyone know who the fastest player to 50 wickets is? Jamieson now on 36 after 6. Although, it's obviously anyone's guess if he could be as lethal outside of NZ.

Charlie Turner in 6 matches for Australia back in the 19th century.

Western Province's Big Vern did it in 7.

He should be as he's fast and gets a lot of bounce due to his height. that's a good combination anywhere.
