The health of the game should be measured by more than just the results of the England team. For example viewing figures would be another metric.

There's a whole generation cricket has been lost to. It is unrealistic to expect that damage to be undone overnight.
It's 4 times what Channel 4 get normally in the timeslot which is decent enough and might encourage them in the future to do it again, although most of the other tours seem to have been bought up already by BT and Sky. I just see this as a nice bonus and hopefully as people start realising it's on and get into it, more and more people will tune in.

The Day/Night Test will be the interesting one, starting at 9am each day it really is perfect to stick on in the background whilst working etc...

Must say Im enjoying watching the C4 coverage - I only catch a couple of hours between getting up and starting work, but for me it suits.I dont have the time to sit and watch all the time - I doubt if I could get up at 4.30 these days and expect to get any work done - best of all it doesnt cost an arm and a leg, which is what clinches it for most people I expect - except for the most avid or cash rich - if its a choice between paying for Sky etc. or having a life then Im afraid,as with most people I suspect, other things take priority.

Certainly much appreciated by me. I think it's worth mentioning that with empty stands the spectacle is not nearly so interesting -- especially for the casual cricket-watcher -- as it might be with a full house of Indian fans, the Barmy Army, etc. That is a much bigger part of it with cricket than it is for most sports, because there is space between balls and between overs to fill. Sometimes in the C4 coverage there are patches where the scorecard is up and no one is talking, which usually would be punctuated by interesting crowd shots.

Not that I really feel any explanation need be given for viewing figures that aren't going through the roof yet. For example, I have no idea how many other people listen to "Opera on 3" on a Saturday evening, but that doesn't affect how I feel about its being there.

The 2nd Test will have a 50% Capacity crowd (about 25k). I think crowd shots and generally seeing people close to each other again is going to look a bit strange.

I listened on Saturday - archive NY Met 1960 performance of Il Trovatore starring Leontyne Price and Franco Corelli. He certainly Can Belto. Fantastic stuff. Not my favourite Verdi opera- although I have performed in it back in my opera chorus days.

Having replied re your second paragraph, i turn to the first one, about the cricket. Those of us with Sky were of course watching all the home test cricket last year. The empty stands and lack of crowd noise took a bit of getting used to - in its place there was ambient noise - similar to a quiet crowd at Lordís - no cheering or singing. But it was test cricket, played with the same intensity as in front of a crowd of thousands. The players got used to it, and so did the viewers. Hence, Sky subscribers are familiar with the situation in India.

When you ask for crowd shots, you may be glad to have been spared Bumble spotting someone in the crowd wearing a Sky earpiece (for the commentary) and proceeding to have a one-sided conversation with him.

I am glad about this! It seems to me that the "players' balcony" has had more camera scrutiny than usual as a result of there being little else for the cameras to focus on in between times. Thankfully I haven't seen Buttler picking his nose there. And it is nice to see Chris Read looking relaxed back in the England fold ...

In the Sri Lanka series there was one lone Englishman watching from a raised piece of ground overlooking the stadium. Apparently he’d gone there in March, but no cricket happened so he just stayed on....

In a lovely gesture by the team, they stood and applauded him after the post-series ceremonies.

That's the one match I'm not sure whether they will show it all on their main channel, they can easily give up their morning schedule but they have that lunchtime programme and Countdown to show.

Yesterday they moved that programme with Tim Lovejoy to E4. I heard there were complaints from both of their regular viewers.

It will be interesting to see how long they keep cricket on this morning now the live stuff is finished. Hopefully, a fairly full highlights package.

Just switched over to C4 for the first time since the game ended and they are showing The Big Bang Theory.

I can't see a highlights show in the schedule for the rest of the day - any ideas ? Is it on catchup ???

Highlights are on All 4, which I think is like the iPlayer or ITV Hub, don't know, not used it.

You'd think they might have basically just shown most of the day's play again for those who missed it. This is where dedicated sports channels show FTA imposters for what they are.

I can't understand why people bitch about programmes being switched to a different channel like this unless they literally can't access it, which seems unlikely as my television is 15 years old, I don't have any fancy boxes for additional channels and I can get E4, More 4 and the like easily enough.

I was up shortly before 6am today for the last few overs of the first session, then watched through to the finish. Looking forward to the next one on Saturday.
