Is that right? Arguably England's best 3 performers have lost the most points?

If a player hasn't played for a while they keep losing points for every Test they missed since they last played

Right, so they've lost points since they last played, but surely the rankings update with a slow reduction in points rather than just wait till they next play again. Surely they've gained points from these performances from the last set of rankings?

It does seem daft. Odds are that if they play well in next matches the points won’t go up as far as they came down this time.

'ere, I thought some were questioning Leach as a Test bowler

He has nipped back up above 29 average during this series and the last, but New Zealand tours aside he has returned pretty decent figures in all (other) series to date. Not great in Sri Lanka, but took nearly as many wickets as Bess and bowled more balls for less wickets more than was expensive per se.

Will be interesting if the safer bat option of Bess is continued with in England :

in England

Bess : 222 runs @ 44.40 & 11 wkts @ 51.36
Leach : 147 runs @ 29.40 & 12 wkts @ 28.00

Leach's batting is mostly from his 92 vs Ireland, but has done little wrong with the ball in England yet had only the one series (exclude Ireland as a one off), Bess on the other hand has played three series and yet to average under 40 with the ball in any of them.

Leach is one of the most reliable tailenders for a batsman to be partnered with.
