I see Kallis is nominated for test player of the year. Does it take into account the last test series?

Mendis is a nailed on certainty to win emerging player.

Cricketer of the year & Test player of the year should be Shiv. ODI player, not sure. Mendis newcomer of the year. Don't know about Associate players. Symonds the spirit of fishing, Harbi the spirit of cricket and Pakistan the lifetime spirit of cricket award. It all works out perfectly.

Well the Spirit of Cricket is a no brainer, it has to be NZ for our impeccable conduct and high standards of fair play. Also we won't win any of the other awards so it's only fair we get something as consolation.

With NZ players cruelly overlooked for all the other awards, I guess I would probably have to go for Chanderpaul as cricketer/test player of the year and Sharma as the best emerging player. Surely Taufel will have to win the umpire of the year again given the lack of competition.

I'd expect that, and Chanderpaul to either get the Test player of the year or the Player of the year award. Don't care about the others to be honest.

Well what about Sharma? After all Sharma was outstanding against the Aussies in the test series here last summer, virtually leading the Indian attack as a rookie 19 yr old. He had pretty much the whole Aussie top order in trouble at various times, including a brilliant spell at the WACA where he even made Ponting look like a complete dunce.

Surely the greatest test of a cricketer is to perform against Australia on their home turf, something that Mendis, Broad and Morkel are yet to do. Mendis may be the flavour of the month at the moment but most of his good performances have been at home in spin friendly Sri Lanka, the real test will be performing well away from home in less spin friendly places like Australia, SA or England. All things considered I think Sharma deserves the emerging player award as much, if not more than Mendis does. At the very least it shouldn't be the walk up start for Mendis that most people seem to think it is.

He only had that one good series, then went off track after that with injuries and loss of form etc...Mendis has been a revelation since his career began and has wowed everyone alike, so i would go for him. Point about Mendis, i'm sure he will trouble anyone, anywhere, he hardly spins the ball anyway- well isn't a big spinner of the ball but his variations and tricks are the key assets to his game.

Obviously the Aussies were hampered by not playing enough Tests in the period otherwise none of the other nominees would have had a look in.

Cricketer of the year is a toughie. I may have to lean towards Greg, as he's had a pretty good season with the bat and kicked a few goals with his captaincy too.

Test player of the year must go to Steyn. The batsmen listed all had good seasons - but none of them really stand out. Steyn has taken 86 Test wickets in the period, nearly 50% more than the next best, and at a stunning average of 18.1. Chanderpaul obviously played a lone hand against the Aussies, but his overall performance doesnt really look that flash. He batted in exactly the same number of innings (15) as that dud Andrew Symonds, but only scored 42 more runs. Maybe he should stop hiding at number 5.

Yousuf should get ODI player of the year. Not sure why Bracks got nominated - he probably wasn't even the best of the Aussies.

Mendis will get emerging player of the year award because of his outstanding performances in both forms of the game. Broad has been good (very good actually) at the one-dayers, but not so impressive in the Tests. And while Sharma bowled some brilliant spells against the Aussies Greatbatch, his 3 tests still only bought him 6 wickets at an average of nearly 60.

Twenty20 International Performance of the Year. Chris Gayle will get the nod for his T20 century in the opening match of the (not) World Cup, but I reckon Yuvray Singh's 30 ball 70 which won India the semifinal against us was better.

Spirit of cricket should definitely go to the wettest team in cricket - NZ.

Well you probably have a point that Sharma only had that one really good series against Australia but he was still very impressive none the less against tough opposition in foriegn conditions, especially for someone so young and inexperienced. It's true he probably fell away a bit after that but I think that was more due to injury than form so not really his fault. To be honest I haven't seen much of Mendis but he seems to have all the variations and tricks so there is no reason why he shouldn't be successful against any opposition, anywhere, however he still needs to prove it.

By the way I also thought NZ's very own 19 yr old fast bowling tyro, Tim Southee, may have been worth a nomination for best emerging player after his impressive performances against England earlier this year. Maybe he hasn't been playing long enough yet to be considered but he is every bit as promising as Sharma, Broad and Morkel in my very unbiased opinion.

Don't forget Sharma also had Symonds caught behind off that huge edge in Sydney which Blind Freddy Bucknor somehow failed to see. So technically he should have had at least 7 wickets and probably deserved more with how well he bowled.

Glad you agree that NZ should win the Spirit of Cricket award, although I'm not sure what you mean by wettest team in cricket. I thought England would have that honour after Flintoff's pedalo and near drowning exploits.

Fair point GB, he's very young, he did something with bat and ball and was playing in test teams which were under siege.

Sharma did get injured but didn't do that badly when he bowled v SA (albeit in only one game) or in Sri Lanka. Mendis though is a different story and would deserve this award, but I do wonder on non-turning pitches whether the lack of grip will make him less effective.

Also if SL do come over here with anything like a strong team over here, provided we don't prepare a bunsen like Trent Bridge in 2006 I wonder if he will enjoy England in May when it could be darn cold.

I think that all the teams will read Mendis that is study his bowling and will try to learn how to play him. So, I guess he wont be as effective then as he is now.

But yes he could be the emerging player of the year, he's done terrific stuff with the ball and I think he should get his reward.

As for Sharma, I see a lot of talent in him too, he is young and had done loads of eye catching bowling. He is first on my list fro the emerging player award.
