there seems to be an absurdly large number of nominees

I think Onions has been entered into the cricketer of the year category more for comedy value rather than anything else.

That's certainly an explanation. It's very hard to see why he'd be in there for any other reason, to be honest. I know the England selectors are barking but leaving out a potential cricketer of the year for two tests in a series would be rather absurd were he a remotely sensible nominee.

The nominations were made by a five-member selection panel headed by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and included former cricketers Anil Kumble of India, Mudassar Nazar of Pakistan, Bob Taylor of England and New Zealand's Stephen Fleming.

What's the qualifying period? I though duminy would have been a good nominee for emerging player

As to Emerging Player of the Year: Ian Bell won this award three years ago and we're still waiting... |

On second thoughts I would give ODI cricketer of the year to Sehwag. An average of 60 at a strike rate of 127 is staggering.

In fairness, that's hard to argue with.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise we were only allowed to consider the batting candidates for player of the year?
Overall Player of the Year- Mitchell Johnson (even with the disappointing Ashes he has had a big year- it says a lot that the focus was on him throughout the Summer) Test Player of the Year-Dale Steyn (best player for best team) ODI Player of the Year-Ajantha Mendis or Umar Gul T20- Dilshan or Afridi |
