I was amazed at Johnson getting this award.

Really? Probably the best pace bowler of the year- even when bowling tripe against England he took quite a few wickets. He also smashed a test century, has had a very good ODI year and is one of the best fielders in the world. It says a huge amount about him and his personality that the Ashes series involved so much speculation and intrigue regarding his form.

The Guardian
The night was an embarrassment for the ICC as South Africa snubbed the ceremony in protest at not being shortlisted for any major awards and India, knocked out of the Champions Trophy at the group stages, returned home early to a certain inquest rather than attend the event. |

India and Australia scooped the major awards then. And Dhoni is test captain of the year.

Shows just how great England are. We won the Ashes without our best player and one other on one leg while the team shouldered the burden of Bopara and yet we still beat the team with the best player in the world (who we made look pretty ordinary) and the emerging player. Watchout world here come England.
Player of the year was cheered by the England fans every time he came on to bowl. There was talk of dropping him yet he still wins splendid. Would be fitting if today he opened the pie shop again and England win. |

Very true. Whinging about Strauss not letting Smith a runner for being fat, yet complaining when the Lions were upset at the attempts to rip out player's eyes in the recent test series.

Then I would say that perhaps Steyn was fairly unlucky not to get a higher billing as would Smith. I would say that Johnson did deserve a reasonably high ranking but it has to be remembered that until about last December he had an ordinary time of things and came good then and hit the heights in South Africa, but came down to earth a bit test wise. ODI wise he's still done very well.

To be more exact 1 August 2008 - 31 July 2009.
So that would preclude a couple of matches that enabled Strauss to become Ashes winning captain. However, within the given time frame his performance was outstanding, 1222 runs at 61.10 with 6 centuries. He deserved a major award and was robbed. Very strange indeed. From an England point of view, how did Stuart Broad got into the test team of the year? 33 wickets at 34.93 in the official time frame. It must have been that arse that got him there. His spell at the Oval was brilliant but past the deadline. In any case, as Strauss says, Broad is an upcoming player with great potential. His test cricket in the period 2008-9 is surely not enough as it stands. I'm not sure how the judges come to their conclusions. I wonder if they just go on reputation rather than the facts? Our two best ODI players get into the ODI team of the year regardless of the fact that both of them have been missing through injury, not to say that they haven't done well when they have played. Our best bowler in Flintoff's absence has been Broad and I'd have thought that if Broad deserved a place in an XI of the year it would have been this one. This will become apparent when England lose today without him. ![]() |
