Cameron Steel was at a Durham members forum tonight and was asked about Jennings and Coughlin. He said that both were annoyed about the story in the Times and both players said they have not been in talks or been approached by any county.

Two bits of gossip from the Durham commentator on Radio Newcastle:

Will Gidman to leave Kent and join Durham. Apparently Gidman still keeps his home up there and has spent much of the summer playing club cricket in the North Eastern league. He even did some commentary stints on Radio Newcastle during the T20 Blast and his contract with Kent is specifically red ball only (which would explain why perennial reserve bowlers such as Thomas, Haggett and Hartley played in Kent's hopeless RLC campaign and Gidman didn't).

Graham Onions likely to be leaving Durham at the end of this season due to age and dubious fitness. Who else might take him on I don't know. A pay as you play deal might be the only way he'll get another gig...

Haven't noticed any departures announced by Surrey, who've already lost Ansari, Footitt & Sibley since the start of this season.

No idea when their contracts expire:

Arun Harinath turned 30 this year and hasn't played any first XI cricket this season other than a two match loan spell at Leics that yielded a top score of 26.

Matt Dunn (aged 25) hasn't played a first XI match since May last year and hasn't played a 2nd XI match since May this year.

Freddie van den Bergh (aged 25) hasn't played a first XI match for three years and all six of his first class appearances were in MCCU matches.

James Burke (aged 26) has only played an MCCU match for Leics while on loan and one minor counties match for Devon this season.

Given that teenagers such as Ryan Patel, Conor McKerr, Ollie Pope and Amar Virdi are getting picked for Championship fixtures with results still needed to guarantee Division 1 cricket for next year it's hard to see much of a future at Surrey for any of those older players, although I guess Dunn & Burke may be undergoing rehabilitation from injury?

Unusually for this time of year, I've yet to see Surrey linked with signing anyone from other counties.

Harinath and Dunn have another year/season to run.

Harinath I think was supposed to get a first-team call-up but has a side strain. I guess then he will chug along until has contract runs out.

Dunn is "out for rest of the season with back and respiratory problems" so obviously that doesn't sound great at all.

Van den Bergh and Burke are out of contract at the end of this season.

Burke left Surrey a couple of months ago.

At 34, Jim Allenby still has a few years left in him- especially if he drops down a division.

Would Kent be interested as a repaclement for the 41 year old Darren Stevens? The county spent seven years grooming Adam Ball to step into Stevo's boots when he finally hangs them up - but belatedly realised this season that he's not going to make it and have just sacked him!

Both should be helping the side get to Div 1.

According to this, Coughlin has been in talks with three different counties.

Durham will be sorry to see him go but have apparently already lined up Will Gidman as his replacement.

Jennings may wait to see whether he makes the England tour party to Australia. If he doesn't, he might well view Trent Bridge as his next career move.

Article also mentions Onions, who it says has been offered a CC only contract by Durham but is open to offers from other counties.

Billings out of contract and talk on BBC radio commentary today of him replacing Chris Read at Notts ...

The stumbling block seems to be his IPL commitments which mean he misses all of April and most of May, whichever county eventually gets his signature...

iii) Warwicks are courting Luke Wright and Durham's Paul Coughlin.

iv) Middx are releasing James Harris. Glamorgan and Warwicks would like him but he wants Div One cricket (and wages to match). If Kent get promoted, could that be an option?

v) Notts are hot in pursuit of Keaton Jennings, who has a get-out clause in his contract as long as Durham are in Div Two
Coughlin off to Notts on a three year deal.

Played 29 CC games in 7 years for Durham. More to do with being injury prone than form. Hopefully they will take Jennings as well. It seems to be a straight shoot out between Lancashire and Notts now as to where he goes.

I hope its not Lancs. We have two South Africans, a Zimbabwean, West Indian already.

The West Indian and one of the South Africans are out of contract at the end of this season. There is also an Australian out of contract at the end of this season.
The Zimbabwean is rumoured to be returning to where he came (although he's said he wants to see out his contract for 2018).

Hope he thinks Newell will help his career and not even think of Lancs.

No hardship seeing him go.

He had one good season for Durham and got selected by England at the end of it.

Kent appear to be favourites to sign Onions.

Told him he can have a two year deal with a coaching role at the end of it.

Right age profile for the current Lancashire set up. They have been trying numerous young seamers in the seconds this year, mainly born 1998-9 looking to the future, but, no one standing out.
Lancs would never let a youngster play regular first team cricket without a season or two in their seconds. There is a gap for a year or two, especially if either or both McLaren and Jarvis don't return.
