It's like people now liking Ed Balls.

Its not been three years since Strauss last played for England - and the majority of players from his last game are still in the England setup. So seems a bit too early for this position for Strauss but time will tell, I suppose.

"In this new high-performance role for the England & Wales Cricket Board [ECB] he will be responsible for the long-term strategy of the England menís cricket team and for developing the right coaching and management structure to support it."

Surely this is the CEO's job.

The ECB are just paying someone a lot to act as lightening conductor.

Is this really the best allocation of the Sky money that we wouldn't get if cricket was on terrestrial and in the public consciousness?

Would this have been your view if they'd appointed Vaughan? Is the validity of the job dependent on your approval of the incumbent?

It's the first we've seen of the job description.

Actually, now you've mentioned it, wasn't this why Vaughan turned it down?

shouldnt he be showing a bit of leadership now and explaining why Moores was sacked and the next steps in appointing a new coach - maybe explaining what he thinks his role is!

I think this will come eventually. It'll depend on whether Strauss decides he needs more well-defined selection powers. He's currently just 'overseeing the selection process,' which sounds to me like the 'sitting in on meetings' role that Downton had.

Nope, this is how the ECB makes announcements. It gets leaked days before, then someone presses the button for the press release to come out some time at the weekend. No interviews, no press conference.

Even if true, is that a reason to dislike someone?

Wonder who they'll bring in next to take the can for the next failure. Perhaps, though, he'll be lucky, and the team will perform well, as teams often do, no matter who is coach.

I hope by 'overseeing selection' it means he's actually a selector and he's not sticking his nose in on meetings like Downton. If he's in charge of the cricketing strategy and the 'player pathway' whatever that is, surely he has to pick the players.

I submit that if Vaughan had been given the job you would have been so delighted that he was going to be in charge of something that you wouldn't have cared.

Unlikely as, whilst I respect him, Vaughan wasn't even my first choice and I'm big on governance.

Maybe he will take over the chairman of selectors role as part of his job.

Moores deserved better than the way he had been treated this week. Downton should never of asked him again and he should never have been stupid enough to say yes!

Hopefully. If he doesn't plan on touring he can watch plenty of matches in England. I've never been a fan of a group of selectors. There's probably a lot of bargaining that goes on and players who should be in miss out. Strauss and the new coach should be the ones who make selections.

We don't tend to tour very often during the county season though, this recent tour being a bit of an exception.
