Who should open the batting for England against Pakistan?

I know there's been a few of these polls before, and the last one resulted in a landslide victory for Lyth. Six months on and there is a vacancy again, so who should open?

Should I add Root to the options? I think he's a valid candidate, even if he's unlikely to be moved from his current position. If everyone keeps failing, it could happen.

Compton is also a possibility, he was being talked up on TMS today.

Good idea. Add them both.

Just going to ask, where's the Compton option?

I wouldn't open with him but the fact that Compton can be remotely seriously considered is a sign of how deficient our options are.

Whoever they pick is just keeping it warm for a couple of years for Tom Abell.

Done. Just a note for the future, I believe it's better to tick the 'Make votes public' box when creating polls, as then everyone can see who voted for whom - especially when we look back in a few years time.

Can you change that too?

If Alex Lees had scored enough runs this season, I think he'd be coming in - but he hasn't so he isn't. Hales looked likely before a poor ODI series - he's probably still favourite.

There has been another small push for Compton in some parts of the media, helped by his ton against Yorkshire last week. It'd be a surprise, as would Moeen going up the order.

Afraid not. Shame, as I already want to know who chose Bell

I don't think Ali going up the order would be a surprise. Bayliss more or less said it would happen after the Ashes.

I'd like to see those quotes. As far as I remember he was asked about it, but was non-committal.

Doesn't confirm it but never denied it either, which is telling. There probably another source which gives more quotes.

It's entirely non committal, as Rey says. Not having ruled it out doesn't mean they're thinking about it too seriously.

Yep.

It could still happen, as it doesn't seem radically worse than any of the other options - but you can get a feel of where the wind is blowing by the various media outlets. It was a popular idea before the end of the Ashes, but as it was talked over most pundits went for Hales as the favourite, after taking into account the following series in South Africa. Rightly or wrongly, opening with Ali in that series is seen as a bad idea.

A sensible point was made on TMS was that even if it was thought Ali might fill the spot, they couldn't go on tour without a bona fide opening batsman in the squad, even if (thinking of Compton) he didn't actually play.

Stewart thinks Lyth should get another chance.

I don't understand people who don't think moeen should open because he won't in South Africa.

Rashid is unlikely to play in South Africa so why should they play him in UAE?

We need to find an opener who can form a consistent partnership with Cook so ideally the one who plays in UAE should also play in South Africa, unless it's a try-out that doesn't work.

It's a really tough call. I suspect Moeen will get the nod but the selectors might be put off by the failed Trott experiment. Compton is probably in with a shout but, in the absence of an outstanding candidate, they might just give Adam Lyth another opportunity. Rightly or wrongly I think Hales' dismal showing in the one day series will rule him out.
