Wow, I though Jack Russell was supposed to be perfect.

It's not uncommon for spinners and keepers to have secret signs, although it usually involves something along the lines of the bowler running his fingers through his hair, rather than changing his approach.

Interesting that Salisbury said that changing his approach messed him up. With cricket being so much about confidence, that doesn't surprise me. I think it's vital with most players to discuss and listen, rather than prescribe.

Someone trying to establish himself in the Test team is unlikely to be helped by being asked or told to do things differently, whether that's changing his routine as a bowler or being pressurised into using the forward press as a batsman. A coach messing with a bowler's action appears to cause problems as often as not. In my opinion, the coach should be suggesting things which may help but making sure the player has the freedom to decide what works for him.

Interesting anecdote from Salisbury about having to change his run up so Russell could pick his googly. Says it all really.

The sad thing is I bet Russell could have picked his googly and it was more a case of not trusting himself to do so.
