Sounds a bit like re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, but let's see what happens - appointing from within has worked at Northants and (maybe, but I have my reservations) at Derbyshire. I'd have liked to have seen a fresh face come in, Chris Adams would have been my pick to shake things up, but maybe they felt this would be better than a "big name" coach eating into the staff budget and having less/no money for new players.

Agree with you on that, a lot of people saying this is just until the end of the season so we may well get a new coach then. Interesting that the reasoning for the reshuffle of staff was because Phil Whitticase has been working too much and not for poor performances.

Leicestershire have been giving a try-out to all-rounder Ian Holland, professional at Fleetwood but also on Victoria's books with a contract for next season there.

He was born in Wisconsin, US, but has a UK passport.

How has Nathan Buck fared so far this season? Seemed to be the next big thing a few years ago?

Been mostly in the seconds since June. Seems to have been overtaken by Freckingham.

Ben Raine has made a handy Leicestershire debut so far, scoring 37 and taking 4-98.

Leicestershire really are plumbing the depths of dreadfulness now. By results they must be the worst county side of recent years; even worse than Derbyshire when they were bad.

Coach Ben Smith said they are "not that far away from putting in a better performance and being on the other end of the result". He must be in fairyland if he really believes that.

The one shining light is Ned Eckerseley, who has been a run machine this year amid all the carnage.

Leicestershire give a debut to Angus Robson, brother of Middlesex batsman Sam Robson.

Another catastrophic batting performance. Morale must be at rock bottom.

Boyce, Buck, Cobb, Eckersley, O'Brien, Sarwan, Smith, Sykes, Taylor, Thakor, Thornely and Wyatt are all contracted for 2014.

Boyce - seems to be burdened by the captaincy, his form has tailed off since he took it on.

Buck - needs help? Was playing for the Lions only last year, gone rapidly downhill.

Cobb - Abysmal 4-day form, also needs working on.

Eckersley - superb.

O'Brien - ok

Sarwan - supposed captain, hardly ever seems to be at the club due to international commitements.

Smith - seems best in the short form.

Sykes - work in progress?

Taylor - good at t20.

Thakor - clearly promising, weighed down by the side's constant defeats?

Thornely - delivers far too rarely

Wyatt - ?

Unless some are paid off, all these guys will be there next year.

I'd like to see a new face come in from outside, someone who can shake things up and help these guys, instead of them just drifting away.

One of the things that Northants' attributed their success to was a complete change in culture at the club - though obviously the arrivals of Azharullah, Crook and Copeland were a huge boost; Leicestershire would certainly have made strides if they'd had those three on board.

But Leics don't seem to be in the market for such players. Kent have just signed Mitch Claydon and David Griffiths, who are just the sort of experienced seam bowlers Leicestershire could desperately do with.

I would like to see someone such as Chris Adams come in to really shake things up. It would be just the sort of challenge he would relish. Bring in an experienced captain with him to lead from the front on the field, and look to a 5-year plan to rebuild the side.

From the outside there seems a lot to be proud of/positive about. Ned, Thakor, Buck, Cobb, etal. are genuinely promising (I do not know much about the rest except Sarwan of course). Add in Taylor and many other counties would be jealous of your youth development.
As you say mix in a few experienced heads (Henderson, Ireland, Hoggy Sarwan in 2013) and you could have a competitive team? The problem with experienced seamers is that for every Richardson/Masters/Chappell there is an injury prone high earner.

Eckersley to Middlesex is the rumour.

That would leave them really high and dry.

I know he's from that part of the world, don't think that would be a particular surprise. Only thing for me about Eckersley is he seems very one dimensional in that he is a 4day specialist and can't seem to do a great deal in one day cricket / T20

Robbie Williams won't be offered a new contract at the end of this season. Another injury prone player Phil Whitticase wasted limited finances on. So far, Hoggard and Henderson are retiring and Williams being released.

Well it would be a start.

Problem is the bowling needs major attention.

The "good" thing is that when a side reaches rock bottom it is easier to start making a few steps forward again.

If I was in charge at Leicestershire, I'd be giving serious thought to targeting the new 50-over competition. It's going to be short (just 8 qualification games), some clubs may not make it a priority and qualification is going to be much easier next year - two groups of 9 with the top 4 in each going on to the quarters.

Leicestershire proved at least vaguely competitive in the 40-over stuff, so it would not be such a big step up (because I think it's going to take a lot of work to get competitive in the 4-day game). You don't need superstar bowlers - just look at this year's finalists.

They don't even have any all-rounders listed on their wiki-page. Minor counties for one season for me. Northants are second on a smaller budget.
