The scorecard from that game has now been officially amended by the ACB to show Hughes as 63 not out rather than retired hurt.

A moving service for Phillip Hughes. His brother and sister spoke very well and from the heart. Michael Clarke also did him proud. He talked a lot about the spirit of cricket. This will be a watershed moment for the game we love, I think. If one good thing can come out of this tragedy then it will be that everyone starts playing the game in a nicer way with less of the macho ********.

I was awake during the night and listened to the whole funeral service on the radio. Clarke: " We must dig in and get through to tea. And we must play on. So rest in peace my little brother. I'll see you out in the middle" - weeping buckets into my pillow.

My mam comes out of hospital today. She had a fall and bumped her head. But she is 89. A tragedy like this leaves us all shocked. Now we move on. We do not change the game we love. We support Sean Abbott as we would a boxer who has downed his opponent. We make people aware that it is a dangerous sport. I don't agree with you SVG. Sport without risk is meaningless.

Have to agree Charlie. "Nice" sport is very seldom fun or interesting sport, both to watch and to play. Because you have to really want to win and desire it, in order to play to your peak. And when you are pushing those boundaries, things will always spill over. It is just human nature and isn't going to change.
When I think of "friendly" sport, I've never forgotten a bit in an old Grange Hill from decades back, where they tried to bring in "non competitive sport". I just remember two teams playing footy passing the ball around from opponent to opponent... "you have the ball" "no you have the ball" "no really I insist" "honestly please, here, take it" "thanks, but here, have it back".....

I was not saying it should not be competitive. The nasty edge should go. It turned into pointless macho crap. Play hard but play fair.

Worth mentioning the way the Indian squad have handled this also. It was nice to see Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri (among others) walking alongside Gilly, quietly paying their respects to Phillip Hughes.
Although extenuating circumstances and disruption unavoidable, the Indian squad have also had their preparation for the series disrupted, but have been understanding and supportive. Kudos. |

Never thought someone could die in a healthy game like cricket. Even when today I think of it and i cant believe this tragedy.

crickets best played with aggression and intimidation imo, theres no way us Aussies will be changing anything, i dont think Phils passing will have any long term effects on the way the games played, and the 'macho' stuff your referring to what ever that is had nothing to do with Phils death. Phil was a handy sledger himself, cricket would be pretty boring without intimidation, aggression, sledging, etc, and the drama it creates, and it all makes for better series imo. cheers |

Well, each to his own, obviously, but I don't think this is true at all. In fact I love cricket without any of those things, and I find them unbelievably tedious and infantile. Cricket can provide enough dramas of its own, on its own terms, without having to have imported into it the most dismal aspects of the rest of the world.
