Eng v WI Series Ratings
England:
Cook 5 - yes, that big double at Egblaston set up a thumping victory but he was poor with the bat thereafter and worse in the field. Stoneman 5 - showed some signs of life towards the end of the series Westley 2 - scored most of his runs in the simple chase at Lords Root 7 - lost his record of consecutive 50s but remained England's best batsman. Malan 6 - like Stoneman also showed some character during the series but also like Stoneman not clear he'll have a long test career. Stokes 8 - his batting continues to improve and showed at Lords that his bowling can still win matches. Bairstow 4 - quiet series Ali 4 - one good innings with the bat but disappointing with the ball after the Windies series Woakes 4 - batted well, bowled like a drain. 2016 looks to be the exception rather than a new norm for Wicketless Woakes. Roland-Jones 6 - shouldn't have been dropped, served well as the 3rd seamer. Broad 5 - passed Beefy but was both unlucky and out of sorts for the most part. Anderson 9 - class above everyone else on show.

West Indies:
Brathwaite 7 - probably the best batsman in the side coming into the tour and fought hard at the top of the order. Powell 3 - tried his best at Lords but shown up by Anderson throughout the series Kope 1 - nope Sope 8 - star of the side, looks like they've unearthed a gem Chase 4 - in form coming into the series but didn't show his potential Blackwood 5 - lone stand at Egblaston but still raw. Dowrich 1 - easily forgotten Holder 4 - bizarre captaincy at times and didn't demonstrate his talent. Bishoo 3 - criminally underused. Strange one. Roach 6 - good to see him back near his best and quickest. Gabriel 5 - made an immediate impact at Headingley but not at full fitness Joseph/Cummins 1 - overawed at Egblaston and quickly discarded.

Cook 5/10 - scored 243 in one innings, only 61 other runs though, and dropped possibly as many catches as he held onto.
Stoneman 3/10 - unconvincing, made a fifty and got a dying Test 40no against a windies attack had given up the ghost Westley 1/10 - another beneficiary of the situation yesterday with a series best 44no, his only double figure score of the series Root 8/10 - some odd captaincy decisions and just the 1 run in the last Test, but mr consistency with a fifty or hundred in every other innings of the series Stokes 8/10 - important 60 in the last Test, a hundred and fifty in the lost cause/2nd Test, and whilst he took 6/22 he still fires blanks with the ball too often (0/40, 0/25, 0/41) Malan 5/10 - prepared to battle which is a plus, needs lives to make even fifty is the over-riding negative for me. Bairstow 4/10 - disappointing series with the bat with a HS of only 21, but kept well enough Ali 4/10 - one knock of 84 that didn't quite win England the Test, chipped in with a few wickets in the 1st Test but 55 overs subsequently bringing only two wickets. Need a bit more consistency from him, batting and bowling. Woakes 3/10 - should not have been recalled this/too soon, did ok with the bat and a 61no but clearly not ready to be bowling in Tests. Broad 4/10 - useful 38 helping England add 66 runs and gaining a very good lead in the circumstances, but disappointing series with the ball after five wickets in the opening Test - although drops didn't help any of the bowlers. Anderson 9/10 - his 8no in the last Test helped England add 31 runs for the last wicket and set England in a position to win, but his 19 wickets in a 3 Test series was outstanding even given the opposition. Didn't take a wicket in the 2nd innings of the lost 2nd Test a reason for not giving him a maximum. Took EIGHT more wickets than anyone else on either side although TRJ also averaged under 18. Can't be bothered to rate the windies in full, Shai Hope the pick of the batsmen (8.5/10) along with Braithwaite (7/10) and Roach the pick of their bowlers with 11 wickets @ 29.82 (6.5/10) |
