Irrelevant. Dropped? Don't care. Even if out first ball after lunch. I always think of Trott at 3 if I think of a "modern" incumbent. The improvement in Stokes' batting has been phenomenal this year.

If can make an observation. These two have basically seen off the new ball. Nothing foolish. Gabriel looks knacked but even so, Stokes could bat 5 for me. Malan at 3?

I'm in two minds as to whether his battling, ugly 50s are worrying (i.e. against stronger sides he'll be gone) or promising (he's knuckled down and made the runs). Certainly in the context of this match - with the talent of Gabriel and the fact Holder and Roach have also bowled well - I'm more inclined to lean to the latter. Pitch seems to be quite flat now, though. Needs to push this one on to a big one to really make an impression.

It certainly bodes well that for such a fine limited overs player he still has the capacity to grind along at this kind of SR consistently, though. Has a bit more between the ears than plenty of other players we've tried.

B. S. Becoming remarkably consistent with the bat.

Stokes averaged 45 in tests last year, currently 47 this year.

Gabriel looking overbowled. If only WI had a spinner or two to prevent the overload from the seamers, eh. Could have been so much worse had he been made to bowl again the 20 or so uncalled no-balls.

Just as England were starting to manoeuvre themselves into a strong position the Windies strike back. There's plenty of work left to do out there.

Difficult question. I'm not sure he has the technique to score big run playing as a free scoring batsman at test level, will be interesting to see if he can play as a bit more of a stone walling player. There have been quite a few attacking first class players who have adapted to a slower pace in tests.

This test is getting very interesting now. Shame about Malan but can they get enough to give the bowlers a chance.

Wouldn't want to be chasing more than 230 on here.

Wasn't long ago that I thought it was looking flat, but this bounce is starting to become problematic. Think seamers might be easier to play than spinners - good job Bishoo isn't being bowled.

Yeah, we have the better spinner too. If only we had picked our no 1 spinner as well...

What a good test this one is becoming. One side on top then the other, the remainder of today is probably the key, if England can get 50 runs for the next wicket it might be decisive.
