Australia V England 5th Test, Sydney Cricket Ground

As no-one seemed to want to start a new match thread, I guess it is left to me. As has been much discussed, Mason Crane is going to make his England debut and Mitchell Starc is likely to return in the place of Jackson Bird for the Aussies.

Although the SCG has a reputation in times past of being spin friendly the last few years hasn't seen too many wickets falling to the spinners and not even Nathan Lyon has had too much success here. That means he takes a ten-fer I reckon this time out............

It sounds as though Crane for Woakes is the only change with Moeen keeping his place. Smith mentioned the pitch was still quite green so unlikely to play a 2nd spinner. We appear to have 4 spinners of varying quality and only 3 seamers.

Losing Stokes is highlighted once again.

Yep, I think it's almost inevitable given the XI that has been selected. Anderson and Broad will need to do a lot of bowling as I can't see Curran, Crane and Moeen taking many wickets. Smith will likely score his 4th ton of the series.

Down to the bare bones I guess they had no option but to persist with Moeen.

What has Balance done wrong? We have a team who have not scored enough runs yet still does not get an opportunity.

He's failed more than once since his promising start to Test Cricket. Who would you suggest he replaces?

Ali. If we are going into a Test with;
7. Ali, with his present mixed up mind.
8. Curran
9. Broad
10. Anderson
11. Crane

Allied to an underperforming top six then I have serious concerns about our ability to score enough runs

Crane isn't sub Anderson with the bat. No doubt will below Broad due to seniority mind you.

He's been another rubbish selection who was always unlikely to get a game in any circumstances. The selectors should walk the plank after this tour.

Yes. But I think Ballance would probably be a better pick than Ali at this stage. Also, I'm not a fan of dropping players after one test, but still I'm a bit surprised that Curran gets another test ahead of Ball, who should be fit again by now and must have been very much beloved of the management at the start of the tour given that they picked him for the first test when he wasn't.

Balance selection entirely down to Root, who being a new captain was in a strong position to get his way. Left to themselves the selectors wouldn't have given him a second thought.

Nice one Chin, just popped into start one.

Should be a good game, Starc has been given the go ahead.

Im tipping an Aussie win with Smith to crack another tonne maybe 2.

Amazed that Ali keeps his place.

Good luck to Crane, though he is not the best leg spinner we could have taken to Australia.

I know what you mean but I think the selectors felt Matt Parkinson wasn't quite ready for test cricket.

This has to be one of the softest bowling lineups England have fielded in test match for sometime. It would be embarrassing to lose 20 wickets to this, as hubristic as it might sound. Am looking forward to see Crane bowl though, we need a renaissance of young leggies.

One of the weakest batting line ups as well! Not exactly a vintage side.

I've seen worse. There have been a few English sides to tour that haven't featured a bat as good as Cook, Root or even Bairstow.

This I'm not so sure about. The likes of Atherton, Stewart and Thorpe might not have stellar records but they played against far better bowling attacks.

It will be interesting to see how Cook fares now that Starc is back.

He'll be licking his lips at the prospect of bowling at that diabolical tail too.
