Ashes 2019

Australia will take the extraordinary step of naming its 2019 Ashes squad just six days before the first Test later this year.

It's a very wise decision actually, with so many Ashes prospects participating in CC and the Aus v Aus A game shaping up as the final audition, to pick a squad that's in form in English conditions instead of plumbing for an 18 man squad months out for 'marketing purpurposes' as we've done in the past. This now also makes the top 6 for Australia very liquid, with Burns, Head, Lasbuschage, Patterson no guarantees to even make the squad let alone final XI. A Maxwell or Renshaw could pole vault into that side if they have an strong few months. I also suspect Pattinson is an almost certain starter if he gets through the early part of the season unscathed, whereas they might not have taken the risk a month or so out.

Are you expecting Starc to be dropped then?

No, at least not for the first test. I think they'll either play the four quicks in lieu of a specialist batsman at 6 or play Pattinson ahead of Hazelwood with Cummins and Starc making up the trio.

Well if they are the same balls which are being used in the Championship I have to say that it's a backward move. The 'word' from our team is that the balls go soft very early, which means that swing is out of the question. Could be a 'run fest' with 'bore draw' if we are not careful!

Also allows for injuries between now and then.

I don't know why the ECB can't ask Dukes to send them a batch of normal Dukes balls for the Tests. It takes one day to make 8 balls. 108 days to the Ashes - 864 balls. Surely won't need more than 200.
