Sri Lanka v England 1st Test 6-10 Nov Galle

Bairstow is out, so Foakes might well debut.

Thunderstorms forecast all week in Galle.

Talk that foakes will play instead of Denly. Makes sense to me. At least as good with the willow and I suspect his keeping will be more important than denly’s bowling. This will obviously mean that moeen bats three but with leach looking likely to be picked this can work because less emphasis on moeen’s bowling.

My guess

Jennings
Burns
Moeen
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Foakes
Curren/woakes/broad
Adil
Leach
Jimmy

My guess would be broad gets the nod but I would prefer Curran for the variation. Adil at 8 is also a long tail.

Rashid usually seems to know what he needs to do when he comes out to bat. Whether he does it or not is a different matter but at least having the right attitude is a start.

Is this an thinly veiled attack on someone who has batted 6.5 hours undefeated when England tried to save a game but on a different occasion moved from 50 to 100 in 12 balls in a different England match?

Stokes and Buttler are one too high. Foakes at 5.

I'm told it's been raining quite a bit today and the next few days are not likely to be much better.

If there was a fix to get a result from this game it will probably backfire.

Hansie Cronje is currently turning in his grave - no match is unfixable!!

On what basis he's batted 6 or 7 for most of his limited county career?

From the squad I'd pick the following with first names for a turn from day one pitch like we had in Bangladesh 2 years ago or after the / if the pitch looks more like the India wickets in the tour after.

Burns
Jennings
Denly
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Foakes/Rashid
Curran/Woakes
Leach
Jimmy

Hope picking 3 spinners works better than it did a few years ago against Pakistan in Dubai. then a bit of a disaster.

We only played 2 spinner against Pakistan in Dubai not that it worked well!

Think they started with 2 but when Wood got injured they replaced him with a spinner instead of another paceman. Not smart

When they announced on 5Live that Bairstow was out I was sure they said the gloves would be taken by Ben Stokes, which struck me as somewhat odd. I later realised that it would be Foakes but can’t be sure if 5 Live got it wrong or I’m going deaf.

Close friends Joseph and the Nut playing a test together. They will be dancing in the orchards of Somerset. Go well chaps.

England go with 3 spinners and Foakes, at least they were "bold" enough to drop Broad.

England win the toss and bat, not surprisingly 2 down in no time.

Lol. Burns strangled and moeen with a Jaffa first ball but dubious batting. Root might as well open.

Not criticising a batsman for being strangled irritates me.

We can criticise Root for that brain dead dismissal. He pretty much ran past that to get himself yorked. A pretty little 35.

And no less dumb from Jennings getting bowled cutting. Two wickets more than healthy at the least and the prospect of a sub 200 score.
