White smoke over Lord's

Malan dropped Pope called up.

Woakes returns for Stokes.

Pope has 1012 fc runs. I wonder how many English batsmen have been called up with fewer?

@swildecricket
If Ollie Pope plays this week, he will do so with only 15 first-class appearances behind him. Matches before Test debut:

14 James Anderson
16 Dom Bess
20 Haseeb Hameed
22 Chris Schofield
29 Mason Crane
29 Monty Panesar
38 Sam Curran

Well he's sort of going to have to if he wants to play!

What about Darren Pattinson?

Well spotted. He only played 11 f/c matches.

I wonder if Malan would have been dropped if he had held on to that first catch when Kohli was on 21, even if he’d dropped the next one(s). The match would surely have had the same outcome, just a more emphatic victory. (Although nothing is certain). Obviously his batting leaves a lot to be desired but the focus was on him for his catching.

I reckon so. No-one seems to have ever been convinced he should be playing g for England.

Bit unfair on Pope if he bats above Bairstow, Stokes but especially Buttler iyam. Good luck to the lad

I think the dropped catches showed that his head was completely scrambled, and his batting just wouldn't be likely to improve (not that it had ever really convinced anyway). I like Pope so hope it works out alright and isn't too early for him.

Wonder if it will be Pope, Bairstow or Buttler at 4. Iíd go the latter myself but suspect it will be Bairstow.

Maybe they could flip for that and keeping duties straight after the toss!

I actually donít think thereís anything wrong in keeping it flexible. If Bairstow scores a double ton on the first day will he really be better equity to keep over Buttler? Equally, if India post 600 with Bairstow keeping, is he going to want to go in at 4? Probably not.

Iíve seen Pope keep wicket. Very good.

I would put Buttler at 4, he's long enough in the tooth to play there. If Bairstow is keeping wicket and spent the day in the field, it's asking a bit much for him to be coming in second wicket down. Pope is an immense talent but he deserves to be nurtured in his early test career, play him at 5.

I think we have to be a bit more realistic here. It's not often Bairstow is going to score a double ton. He's only passed 100 on 5 occasions.

I was thinking they might move Bairstow up to 4, give the gloves to Buttler and slot Pope in at 5. The idea of Buttler batting at 4 in a test match is absurd.

Au contraire, that's the perfect position for KP's heir.

There is absolutely no mission of Buttler keeping instead of Bairstow. Not going to happen.

Wise words indeed.

I suppose Malan was always the most likely of three candidates for deselection and the selectors would never have dropped all three.

Pope will bat at 4 - the senior players bat where they want.

Sounds like Stokes could play on Thursday if the trial finishes early.
