I think it's probably Bairstow that falls short of world class rather than Broad or Cook.

Really?

He's averaging 50 across his last 25 tests and has developed into a more than respectable gloveman.

He's had a poor 2017 though. He's obviously very good, but I would say he needs a decent Ashes to be up in De Kock's league.

I think de Kock may be the greater talent, but Bairstow is the proven test player.

de Kock averages under 25 in Asia. Whilst that's a small sample size, it's the same sample size as de Kock in Oz (and remember his hundred came against an attack containing Joe Mennie).

It's only really this season that Bairstow's wicketkeeping has been good enough. Up until then it was dubious but was tolerated because of the expectation that it would improve, and because of his batting. Regarding the batting, as Sharky says, he's had a relatively poor run of late. He isn't really delivering yet in the way we expect him to.

He's doing pretty well in ODIs though...

Only just read this piece. Awful. Glad to see the numerous comments BTL pointing to the chip on Liew's shoulder.

Without doubt, and thankfully the producers have realised it's a good combination.

I saw Greg James was presenting the new Friday music thing on the BBC and wondered how he'd manage that and the Ashes. Shame because I thought he was quite good last winter. It's not exactly an improvement on Sky is it?

No Dagnall on TMS? Is he doing Women's Ashes or is he spending more time with his Winter love of American Football?

Is there any way of avoiding Swann?????

Yes, wait until the third test when he'll have had enough and head home.

Very good. Shame we won't be able to hear him and KP in the same commentary box.

He will probably go out with Ebony for the ODIs.

Women's Ashes

Charles Dagnall, Quentin Hull, Isa Guha, Henry Moeran and Maxwell will keep listeners up to date with all the action, with help from three Ashes winners - former England captain Charlotte Edwards and Australians Mel Jones and Lisa Sthalekar.
