Yeah that's right - bang on.

Anyhoo. I had a nice break from here and it was grand but came back to see if I liked it again. Time to make that break permanent.

The board used to be so much fun and good natured Micky taking. It has all got too personal and point scoring pointless oneupmanship and to be honest I can't be bothered with it anymore. It has been a fun ten years or so on here and it has made me laugh many times. Highlights were the read and jones debates which never got personal.

Thanks to the mods.

Wish all of the very best for the future.

Enjoy Brighton in the premier league.

See ya
Virgs.

Ach, well. Disagreeing vehemently on almost everything apart from Moeen has been a form of perverse pleasure. Good luck to both Somerset and Brighton and wishing you and the family all the best.

I guess that accounts for the Warks/Surrey games then, but Surrey v Essex is at Guildford during the ICC competition. Then we play Somerset twice in the final two months of the season.

It was the massive seventh wicket partnership between Chanderpaul & Clark that gave Lancs the platform to push for victory at The Oval. Not really sure how that's down to the captain. Then, after Surrey failed by just two runs to save the follow on, Lancs never came close to bowling out Surrey a second time.

Much as it was the 200+ partnership between Davies and Livingstone which made the difference in the latest match.

Whilst I agree not everything can always be put down to the captain, but it is the captain together with the coach are responsible for the attitude of the team which includes that of which two batters are at the crease at the time.

I suspect the commentators Bestie refers to would be thinking no further than some of the wickets in that Surrey first innings came after bowling changes.

Yes it was much more a throwaway remark than any detailed analysis of his captaincy. One of them was just impressed because he bowls both offies and leg breaks.

Yes, I admit it is good to see a side apparently prospering under a young captain after being so weak after the first few rounds of last year's Championship.

As for his bowling, I remember him having a couple of overs almost in desperation towards the end of the day during last year's match at The Oval and he clearly caused a couple of decent batsmen a few problems. Whilst he's very much a batsman right now, his bowling looks to be worth persevering with.

I'm not sure there was anything in Ali's post that wasn't good natured

Oh well, all the best and maybe you can re-register with a new user name further down the line to be free of any baggage and dodgy predictions.

Will be interesting to see if that happens with his batting taking him to the verge of the England side. It's been a long while since an England batsman kept up their part-time bowling. Root seems to have more or less ditched his. Collingwood was probably the last and other than briefly Ravi I'm struggling to recall another one since Hick.

The likes of Vaughan, Trescothick, Butcher, Pietersen, Thorpe etc could all have been far more useful as part-time bowlers than they were.

I think niggling injuries played a part in the cases of Vaughan, Butcher and Pietersen, i.e wanting to conserve their bodies for batting.

Pietersen could have been a considerable threat as he bowled the same way he batted - taking risks and looking to force the pace. Once or twice I saw him bowl for Surrey on helpful pitches with attacking fields and he was a handful, but struggled to sustain line and length for more than a few overs as he didn't get the practice in match situations.

I never thought he had a repeatable action, but that might simply be because he didn't bowl enough. He could certainly give the ball a rag, and his late wicket on day 4 in Adelaide in 2010 when he got Clarke at bat-pad certainly helped expose the middle and later order.

Given that he started as a bowler, Pietersen could have done more bowling, yes but you can see why he didn't, when his batting was so obviously his stronger suit and the returns he did get in tests were pretty bad.

Lancs possibly down to two seamers after less than an hour as Anderson limps off. That leaves McLaren & Bailey plus 4 spinners (Parry, Kerrigan, Livingstone & Croft). I wonder if they have their selection right?

The Div One games are faring rather better on this rain spattered day than those in Div Two. At Chelmsford, Nick Browne continues his struggle to make runs in the top flight while, in Manchester, Gary Ballance still cannot stop scoring.

Crane making his first CC appearance of the summer. Not exactly the easiest task, bowling to this Essex side on day 1. So far just the 1 over.

Macca and Parry certainly put in a shift - between them, 51.3 overs, 3 for 93.

Elsewhere, a fine recovery by Cook and Westley to haul Essex from 0-1 to 243-2 at stumps, with Tom falling right at the end.

Belting day for Essex. Shame Browne-o is struggling this year but good to see Westley get in the runs.

Hope so since Yorkshire included 4 seamers and 1 spinner. Ballance clueless what to do at the toss, should have exercised his option to field.
