Some real old-fashioned figures from Parry today.

I thought they'd blown it after their batting stuttered at a snail's pace for two sessions but, maybe there's a tad more in this pitch than yesterday's play suggested?

5 for 0 now !

Well, my day at Chelmsford tomorrow now has a bit more meaning to it than I'd expected at tea today. Good work by Abbott to follow up his 5-fer with solid assistance to McManus in nearly trebling the score. The big lad can certainly bat - as I saw at The Oval last week - but I'll be disappointed if Essex aren't weighing up the option of the follow-on before lunch.

All those Hants batsman failed in concert to score as many runs as Jack Brooks at Manchester this evening. He's smashed his previous career best and I hope he sleeps sufficiently well to stroke a further six notches tomorrow.

Parry seems to have improved as a batsman as well as a bowler this year. Doing a useful job for Lancs today and helping them avoid the follow on (and surely therefore also defeat).

Sangakkara must be a real treat for Surrey fans to see. Someone described him as a Dad batting with his kids - he's been sublime this season amidst some dodgy Surrey batting. Curran jr and Foakes with a crucial partnership here.

I've so far not had the pleasure of a Sanga ton in the Championship this year but I did see his unbeaten 124 against Hants in the One Day Cup and it was delicious. He showed exactly how to chase down a reasonable target, keeping consistently ahead of the run rate and yet never once slogging. Catch him while you still can, cricket lovers, he'll leave a big void when he calls it a day.

Middlesex need 242 off 40 against Surrey. They're 64-2 at the half way stage. Are they really not trying?

They were really not trying. Pretty tall order having lost an early wicket though, to be fair.

Just over 6 an over should have been worth a shot.

Opening with Compton meant they weren't even trying from the out.

He's a couple of years past his best

And still averaging 100 this season

Must get down to see him one more time. The one aesthetically pleasing batsman I could happily watch all day.

He's at Chelmsford this weekend and the forecast looks positively Lankan.

Very much liking the new name and photo, btw.

Essex carrying on where they left off. Surrey 55-5 after choosing to bat.
