So scrap the toss? Or encourage teams to develop and play a spin bowler?

By the sounds of it this has been due to crap batting and good bowling from both sides as the pitch.

Disappointing start for future England Batsman as Somerset skipper.

If a team wants to play on a used pitch, yes.

What about if they use an over prepared unused pitch? It gets quite difficult quite quickly doesn't it.

Only takes one really good partnership to chase this. Our batting has been comical by all accounts.

If the umpires think it's over prepared then the away team get the bat first option.

I'd be amazed if Essex won this game.

And indeed the whole Lancs top order - they were 5 down for f all. Suspect that it is still a pretty tame pitch, though.

They've been Coaded. Might be saved by the weather though.

An excellent win for Essex that. Well batted chaps. Good toss to lose as it sounded like a traditional day three Taunton flat track.

Oh well. We never win in April but arguably that is why we have never won. Oh well.

shot selection can still be wrong on a batting paradise.

Fast medium, about Matthew Hoggards pace.

Not seen any highlights of this match but saw Coad bowl a few times last year. Fast/medium but can bowl the occasional sharper delivery. He's been a good prospect for a while now. Good to see him get (at least) 10 wickets against Warwickshire.

Was interesting seeing a discussion on a Yorkshire forum where they were asking what is is about his game that has been so effective, given that he looks tidy and promising but doesn't look like the explosive destroyer that he has been so far. Think a few of them reckoned he's quite a bit faster than he looks as he seemed to pick up a few wickets by surprising batsmen. The feedback was also that he is a very consistent, accurate bowler (a la Patterson or Hazlewood) to boot and puts a lot of though into his bowling. Plus he looks very technically good, a nice classical action and the reports are that he's a coach's dream in training.
