Regardless of this nostalgia to recall the T20 players, it shouldn't be forgotten that even with the likes of Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Samuels etc, the West Indies were pretty awful in test cricket. If we are seeing signs of a renaissance under Holder, they may not be needed.

Only Gayle of that lot had a reasonable record. The rest were actually pretty poor at test cricket in any case.

The hype is more in regard to what some think Gayle can offer the West Indies test side now. To bring him back at his age, especially when he's played test cricket for so long, would be a backward step and would discourage some of those the West Indies need to look to for the future.

I'm not sure about Gayle's present cricketing credentials but his reinclusion would unquestionably bring back some much needed 'cool' to the West Indies side. Perhaps it's just a reflection of limp contemporary fashion but the present bunch seem a bit staid. None of the brooding swagger of Viv, the nonchalant gait of Mikey and Macco or party animal buzz of Eldine. Gayle might only score the same amount of runs as Powell, but he'll do so with sooo much more pizzazz.

Shai Hope is way cool. I think the West Indies would do well not to revert to Gayle's old-fashioned misogynistic style of cool.

I fear I'm amused by contemporary cricketers who depart from the script to spout offensive nonsense. I blame my 1970s upbringing.

Agreed.

And Jermaine Blackwood offers Chris Gayle style running, so covers off that one too.

FWIW Dwayne Bravo is the one I most want back in the WIndies line-up.

I'm sure he'd be willing to play a few hours for 10k. I hear some mugs are willing to pay that.

Darren Bravo would be a start.

I meant Darren (although I'd still like to see Dwayne, assuming he can actually get fit enough to play 5 days).

Speaking of absences, Redmachine hasn't been on here for a while. Is he still crying into his Joe Root memorabilia fake fake beard?

Would definitely have to be only short term, and after he's played for a few games might he just decide his future is in IPL or somewhere else (and when I say "future" I am more or less meaning $$$$ )

We talk of long winless spells for England in terms of series, 2005 being the first Ashes win for England since 1986/87 kind of thing, but West Indies could win a series in England for the first time since 1988 which is a far longer period albeit only including away series.

And it could prove only their second series win anywhere over England since 1997/98, the tour with the infamous abandoned Test where England were 17/3 and only 10.1 overs were bowled with the pitch deemed too dangerous to continue with balls flying up at batsmen.

I was at Antigua for the final Test when England capitulated pathetically on the final afternoon to lose the series 3-1. That night, St Johns was full of sad pink-faced men moaning "We're never going to beat the West Indies".

Gayle doesn't really play the long form of the game anymore and I wonder whether bringing him back serves to help provide the type of role model this young Windies team needs after the morale-boosting events of Headingley.

He'd need to convince of his support for hard work, training and the team ethic as well as his form in first class cricket before coming back in to the team.

Interesting interview with Gayle on the T&V show. Certainly our two hosts thought it was "interesting". He reckons that all he had to do to get back into the test team was just to tell the selectors and he'd walk back in. Also mixed messages about his priorities. CPL fantastic, exciting, amazing, great party etc etc. Then later says test cricket is the pinnacle. I suspect he just wants to see himself talked about and generate some excitement about a possible return that will never happen.

I'm not happy about the loss, if that's what you're referring to. Who would not be dissapointed about their team Losing?
