AUS in Bangladesh

From the Indian squad O'keeffe and the Marshes miss out (there is a God) and in come Bird & Swepson to replace the injured Starc and Pattinson.

Steven Smith (capt), David Warner (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade (wk), Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Jackson Bird.

Bangladesh probably start favourites?

Always worth a watch if this it's going to be on the gogglebox here.

Interesting Australian squad. Bit of a time of transition for the Australians it seems. What's the likely team?

Renshaw
Warner
Smith
Khawaja
Handscomb
Hackswell
Wade
Agar
Cummins
Hazlewood
Lyon

?

The official line is they're keen to blood spinners who'll be around to tour the subcontinent for the best part of the next decade, but behind closed doors O'keeffe has had one too many public displays of debauchery to be considered. Although, he should be there on merit.

Correct. Khawaja and Agar are confirmed to play. The only position up for debate is the no.6 position between Cartwright and Maxwell. I think Cartwright is a certain starter for the Gabba test, but Maxwell will retain his position for now.

Personally, I don't think there is any shame in losing to Bangladesh away anymore. It might even be for the better of the game with so few competitive test nations at the moment. Hopefully it's a close series and Bangladesh are finally granted a tour to Australia as a result. Lot's of talent and fun to watch.

Is Cartwright's bowling good enough to make him worth picking above the 6th best batsman around?

Well no, but the truth is Cartwright probably is the 6th best batsman around, at least. He has the second highest FC average in Aus aside from S. Smith. I think you could make a case for playing both Maxwell and Cartwright in the side, but it would involve dropping Wade and Handscombe keeping, which won't happen.

What's Handscomb's keeping like? Surely that's worth doing if it's decent. I've never rated Wade.

He kept for Victoria for a couple of seasons, though his batting flourished after he relinquished the gloves. Technically he is better than Wade, so if he could maintain an average in the low 30s you could argue that he is the better options. But then Wade is selected because he's 'chirpy' behind the stumps and 'good value' in the changerooms.

And because he's the heartbeat of the Australian team too.

I've seen him a couple of times in limited overs stuff and he looked no better than when Trescothick kept for England. Keeping on the subcontinent in Tests would be beyond him I feel.

He won't start, since he's there as cover for Cummins, which means he'll probably feature at some point.

Only practice match called off due to water-logging. This preparation couldn't have been anymore of a contrast to that of India, and all signs point to disaster.
