This could be the enthralling contest many of us have been craving all summer. Still not sufficiently enthralling to stop me popping out to see Surrey Stars tomorrow, mind.

Because there's not a lot left to trust tbh. Batting average just above 10 and it is 8.6 since the start of 2010, and that includes his 81 v India of course.

If Windies had caught properly it would have been 150 or so and not 258

I went through all that with MF last week. This idea that Jimmy would be averaging 30 if someone would just give him a chance, dammit is absolute cobblers

Perhaps time to talk about declarations again then!

Not great from England's new ball bowlers, especially Broad. Too short and a bit too wide.

Assuming they'd be able to make the batsmen play, of course. I hope this story about Curtley being the new bowling coach has got legs.

Nobody's mentioning that time Stokes was out but not given. Changed the game as much as the drops.

At least a factor of ten out on the no ball count.

so yet again a test match turns into a game of "who has the worst batting line up?"

Might be fun to go back to the last Test thread and read back some of the hubris

I think the England guys heard I'd bought tickets, so they thoughtfully underachieved yesterday so I could watch the WI bat all day. I went to the second day of the 2nd test against SA as well and that was probably England's worst day of that series.

Isn't so much about how many HE scores, but how long he can hang around.

Anderson's last 20 Test innings

0no off 1 ball
2 off 5 balls
4no off 15 balls
1no off 5 balls
0 off 1 ball
0no off 6 balls
0no off 5 balls
12 off 11 balls
2 off 6 balls
0no off 4 balls
5 off 11 balls
13no off 9 balls
0 off 1 ball
0 off 1 ball
17 off 26 balls
6no off 9 balls
5 off 9 balls
4 off 3 balls
8no off 7 balls
1no off 1 ball

Picked 20 as the sample before I looked at the figures, worked out neatly as half off those he was not out.

Out - 47 runs @ 4.7 (74 balls, HS 17, duck x3)
Not Out - 33 runs @ n/a (62 balls, HS 13no)
Combined - 80 runs @ 8.0 (136 balls, HS 17, duck x3)

Out or not out he faced 9+ balls SEVEN times and on average faced 7 balls, faced only 1 ball 5 times off which he was out 3 times. Take how many times he was not out for 0 or 1 (6 times) and he faced 22 balls for those TWO runs.

Point being if he isn't out early he can provide good support for where he bats and throwing a wicket away in the fear he won't survive is foolhardy.
