There was a 20-minute period before lunch in which he banged on about this non-stop. Apparently it is the only thing that can possibly save test cricket.

What was Woakes's pace like? Have they rushed him back too quickly, because he is pretty bang average when in the low 80s? May have been better to have TRJ as well just in case.

Broad, Woakes, Ali: not enough maidens
Brathwaite and Hope: well played sirs

Still think England can win the match but need a Cook or Root ton.

Get after our bowlers and the confidence drains - and the line and lengths go to pot.

Would not be surprised to see England 'fight back' this morning and finish the windies off.

Then there is the possibility of England scoring well enough to set them a testing target of say 230-250 and them not get it.

But the way things are going it will be the ninth instance in the last 36 Tests of winning a Test and losing the next........

Not sure what their logic was, certainly proves their "don't change a winning side" line they trot out is only when it suits........

If Woakes is 'proven' enough to be brought in when the bowler he replaced was doing very well then he isn't likely to 'prove' anything playing the windies.......

Did hear someone say the conditions at the toss were set for batting, but once overcast which a weather forecast would have probably told them it would get, would favour bowling.

All that said though England contributed to their own wickets in a number of cases. Sure Stokes got several reprieves but if you look at the scorecard England were 71/4 and added 187 for the last six wickets... Had there been a bit more substance and experience than Stoneman, Westley and Malan then maybe they'd have lunched a bit better and batting 1st would have been the right decision.

And don't forget Stokes giving chances is like night following day and day following night - guaranteed.

One swallow a summer maketh not....

They haven't won yet, one Test win would not reverse the fact that they haven't won an away series against anyone other than Zimbabwe and Bangladesh since 1994/95 and nor would it stop there being too many teams and the schedule too hectic

And let's not forget the West Indies are far from solid batting having failed to make 175 in either innings in the 1st Test, and whilst they are faring much better this innings it is down to TWO batsmen, only Blackwood, Shai Hope and Brathwaite are averaging over 15 in the series and the aforementioned two batsmen only because of their efforts this innings.....

The West Indies batting isn't great, but no worse than 3 of our top 5. England should have got 300 plus and being a little below par moved the pressure from batsmen to bowlers for The West Indies innings. England aren't out of the game but 4 or 5 of the top 8 need to contribute in the second innings. Chasing 250 would put the pressure back on to The West Indies in the 4th innings. Malan and Westley must be closing in on the end of their test careers if they fail and we lose. Difficult stick or twist call as one test before The Ashes doesn't bed in a batsman but allows The Aussies some footage to analyse for bowling plans for the first test.

England don't look further forward in terms of the top 5 than they were at the start of this summer (or summer 2015).

With all the (premature) death notices of West Indian cricket , has anyone stopped to ask what has happened to England's Afro-Caribbean players?

There was a time when we relied on the Afro-Caribbean community for our Test match fast bowlers - Small, Headley, Malcolm, Lewis, de Freitas, Lawrence, Cowans, Tudor ...

But the only black fast bowler to play for England in the last ten years is Jordan, I think?

Never mind. There's my English-Somali grandson coming up fast. He's only five and he's only half-African. But I'm coaching him and reckon he'll be opening the bowling for England by circa 2032!

Of those bowlers I don't think any became fixtures of the side though one or two had bad luck with injuries. There was a hope we could find an English equivalent of the great West Indies quicks of the time but they were never remotely in the same class.

Quick wickets needed today. If Blackwood gets going we could be well under the cosh. Wonder if he'll try winding up Stokes to get him a ban...

Warm but a bit overcast at Headingley. Knock them over for 380, rack up 400 and it's game on. Blackwood is probably the key man this morning.
