No problem with Jones coming into the side for Woakes...and the question remains, what to do with the batting? And has Rashid been abducted by aliens?

He's next in for Yorkshire at Headingley (according to the BBC scorecard), Balls. He's not in the England squad so really it's no surprise that he hasn't been selected in the playing XI, Balls.

Is Mason Crane playing or not?

ETA: Ah, I see he isn't.

Can he bat?

Hooray - the ECB have given me two free tickets for tomorrow and my grandson has been invityed to be part of the kids giving an All-Stars Cricket demostration on the pitch at lunchtime.

Boo - we can't go and he won't get the opportunity to play on the sacred turf in from of 20,000 people because his school won't let him take the day off!

I understand why, as it is only the second day of term tomorrow and they're trying to get the children into the routine of a new school year.

But what a fantastic opportunity missed. Forrtunately the little lad isn't upset as we hadn't told him about it. But I am one crestfallen grandad.

I'm not even going to bother going on my own - it would be too painful. I'll watch the match on TV and boycott any footage they show of the lunchtime session!

With this test so late in the season it's really hard to make any kind of prediction. First test in a long time I haven't any money riding on in any way. England must think the wicket won't spin much with 4 seamers, or they don't trust Crane and messed up the squad selection. Guess there's been a lot of rain since the last Lord's test.

Pity. Hope someone else gets the tickets.

I know sansklit....my point, in being a tongue in cheek comment, was why he hasn't been selected in the squad throughout the summer. They've done their best to pick every spinner BUT Rashid.

I'm gonna shout for the West Indies. Apart from Root, Stokes and Bairstow, I find it hard to like most of this England team.

Sir Virgs has won me round re Woakes. And I would have liked to see Crane play, but there's more exciting players in the Windies side.

So do he and Root not get on then?? That's a genuine question. Rashid is considered as a top quality leggie but only in ODIs.

I cannot understand why he is trusted to bowl 10 overs at ODI level but not at test level.

With Wood, he will look reasonably good in the first test of a back to back game, but his stamina and fitness don't last and he can be a bit of a liability in the 2nd back to back game. He was certainly very poor at Trent Bridge v SA this year. I suspect he will go on the Ashes tour but to pin your hopes on him in tearing them up in more than an isolated game is optimistic.
You are quite right with your analysis of course, but I think Wood would have been a good pick for this test, Stokes in for his much improved batting, but not really a front-line bowler. Woakes not truly fit? I have had rib injuries and I know how hard it is to come back even when it stops hurting. Woakes was fizzing it down at 90 mph last year and getting swing and seam. This year he has looked like a medium pace trundler. Not a very accurate one at that.

My team for this test would have been:
1. Cook
2. Stoneman
3. Malan
4. Root
5. Stokes
6. Ali
7. Bairstow
8. Woakes
9. Rashid
10. Wood
11. Anderson

This does not mean that I hate Stewie (or if it comes to that, Westley).

Yes and quite easily, 2nd test was a bit of an aberration in terms of the WI betting performance and even then it took a rather foolhardy declaration from us.

With that being said England aren't exactly looking rock solid in the top order not that it's anything new so we could easily get a closer game than I expect.

England have really messed up the Woakes injury rehabilitation, now he's been included in this squad but not playing he's missed a CC match for Warwickshire which would have given him some useful time in the middle.

On paper, England should win easily. They are significantly better in these conditions with more matchwinners and you wouldn't usually expect the weaker team to outperform the stronger one two Tests in a row.

But the WI do seem very driven and focused so who knows.

So long as the weather holds long enough I would expect so.
