Not a legal eagle but there's certainly self defence as a pretty broad "justification" if you have a good enough lawyer and don't open your mouth to the police before a brief gets there (possibly a slight issue with Stokes!) the most obvious case in this light being Steven Gerrard getting off for punching some guy in a bar.

Can't we just suggest we deport him down under for a few months to join the other convicts.

If they pick Westley over Dan Lawrence then they are not selecting on form and fitness are they?

8. Ali
9. Woakes
10. Broad

12. Ballance
13. Foakes
14. Crane
15. Finn
16. Ball
17. Wood (Overton if not fit)

If this is true, Foakes would be the one who goes against Bayliss' claims that they'll be picking from players with experience (Crane has been in a few squads). I actually don't mind James Vince as he clearly has a bit of style, but it would be hard to argue against those questioning that logic, given his very average FC class over the last 3 seasons and his test average of 19.

Some will see Crane as an attacking selection. I think it's a bit naive. We aren't going to play two spinners out there. If Ali gets injured, I think we need somebody to be economical and contribute some runs. Dawson fits that role for me. Even Patel would've been a smarter option.
A couple of injuries to key batsmen, bowlers or all rounders and you really fear for the winter. Two attacking spinners could end up being very messy. Crane looks horribly like some of the leg spin picks of a few years ago, handful of wickets at 44. Ball not really shown he belongs at the top level. Finn is very up and down these days. Then you get to the batting which looks truly uninspiring. Easier to imagine us 4 down for 50 than 150. That said hard to come up with a better list.

Hopefully a few players will hold there hands up and take their opportunity.

I reckon if that's the squad we are taking, all 17 will have had a game by the third Test match.

I agree although it's difficult to pick a squad I wouldn't think that about.

John Etheridge in the Sun: Cook, Stoneman, Vince, Root (capt), Malan, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow (wkt), Foakes (wkt), Moeen, Crane, Woakes, Broad, Anderson, Ball, C.Overton.

Basically has all but Finn there...and Overton for Wood.

Is the official leak scheduled for 10pm?

Edit: the official leak was a tad earlier than expected but the cat is out of the bag. Vince at 3; mega lolz.

Who leaked it? I thought the ECB didn't leak and that was just Pietersen.

Would be very interesting to know if Vince is Bayliss, Whitaker or Strauss' pick. I wonder if Bayliss will write a book or if we'll have to wait for Strauss' 5th book to see who Strauss scapegoats for that pick.

Hear it is Pietersen Moore's pick.

I talked a few weeks ago about Overton or Porter deserving their chance. I was told that Overton was too medium pace. How fast does he bowl? Looks like he's getting the nod ahead of Finn. Wood clearly not deemed fit enough. Stick to OD cricket me thinks.

Do you think they've gone all Ted Dexter and picked the wrong Overton?

Overton was fairly sharp at the Oval last week. Seemed to have a v quick bouncer. Not as quick as Meaker - but I'd put him above Broad and Anderson for pace. 85-ish? Probably not as quick as his brother though.

I think we'll get steamrollered over there again - our newer batsmen have bedded in less comfortable than Aus and their bowling looks more threatening (if fit). But would be delighted to be proven otherwise...

Craig overton has got quicker and he is massive so gets bounce. Last week Finn got loads of wickets on a doctored green top but this week on a difficult pitch for seamers he has got nothing whereas craig got 3 wickets for 7 runs. Craig has been outstanding this year. I said a few years ago that I see him as the replacement for broad. He doesn't score as many runs as he should either.

Close to 50 wickets at 23 is pretty impressive when half your matches are played at Taunton.

I wonder which of crane's 14 championship wickets was the clincher. What on earth is going on here?

Bowling looks weak and or inexperienced.

Batting thin.

First test XI is therefore the certain 8, Stoneman, Malan and one of the novice medium pacers.

I also saw him take 0/86 on a flat track where Trego took 5/67 last week and didn't see much that made me sit up in my seat. But understand from the potential of him as a like for like for Roland-Jones in a hit the deck sense: or is that Ball?!

In the 5 live sports bulletin the reporter naming the leaked squad said that's it then, England have no chance, Australia will be rubbing their hands.
