He ends up playing with the tail (and I'm including our all rounders at 8 and 9) a lot, so that's really not surprising. His one century came after a big partnership with a top order batsman.

It's been an issue throughout his career and was even more pronounced early on. Then I think he had a purple patch where he scored a cluster of centuries and pushed his average over 50 for a while.

Looking at this test as a whole, of SL do lose, I think a few others might wonder if they could've gone on. I guess Karunaratna might consider himself a tad unlucky.

He wasn't anywhere near as good a batsman early on though, it's really the last few years that have been an issue with his batting especially as he's hardly bowled a ball during that time.

Buttler picks up another unconverted fifty. A shame as he was looking really good. With Sri Lanka failing to notch a ton between them in 5 innings I will have to do a series tally, unless Ali gets there first of course.........,

Sri Lanka scored a total of 11 fifties without converting a single one.

Angelo Mathews 3
Dimuth Karunaratne 3
Dhananjaya de Silva 2
Roshen Silva 2
Kusal Mendis 1

Jos Buttler 2
Ben Stokes 2
Rory Burns 1
Sam Curran 1
Ben Foakes 1

Tons for Foakes, Jennings, Root, Bairstow.

So 11-11 in terms of +50 scores. Really does show how important the converted scores are.

BJ left stranded on 77, but he did take 250 balls to even get there.

Good old fashioned test cricket. Like to see more of it.

While Pujara's was a masterclass in gritty, Rahane's should rank very high on this thread.

Add another from the gritty category for S Marsh. But just two 50's from 14 innings of the Aussie top order tells its own story.

A bit like the recent England SL matches - close game but the side with the centurion takes home the spoils.
