Yup Sky pointed out he & Woakes are injured when talking about the Lions selection. Bairstow has got the gloves.

One of the Sky commentators thought Andrew Gale should be in. No Lyth, Stokes, Rashid or Monty either.

Only place I've noticed the full squad online. Interesting that there's no Rashid but Briggs out-bowled him in the West Indies I guess.

So it's a shoot-out between Bopara and Morgan, is it?

ECB - Onions earns Lions call

They don't tend to pick too many from the same team, two is enough.

Who will open with Adams, I wonder?

Bairstow? Tough ask if he does.

I think including Morgan - with next to no first class cricket behind him - at the expense of a second opener is revealing, given that Chris Adams was convinced that Flower would know his starting XI even at this early stage.

I'm pretty sure it will be Taylor; he did it a couple of time in the West Indies I think. It looks a good squad to me albeit one that looks a little unbalanced without Rashid and Woakes. I'm not quite sure who will miss out on the final XI - Patel or Briggs would be by best guess.

I would've said Dernbach to miss out.

So looks like the bowlers in the first test squad are currently thought to be:

Anderson, Broad, Bresnan, Swann and Tremlett.

I'm not sure about Bairstow instead of Davies

It might even be 5 players they might look at for the number 6 spot

Bopara
Morgan
Hildreth
Taylor
Patel

All of them could do the job but Flower/Strauss probably have already got the 11 for the first Test inked in. Maybe this match would show who is next in line if Morgan fails in the Sri Lanka series.

I was wondering if in fact it's Adams who will miss out? Taylor and Hildreth could open with Ravi at 3.

A pace attack of Finn, Onions and Shazad is pretty strong. Given that they have fat Sam in the middle order they could actually play 4 seamers and add Dernbach, but I suspect they'll go with 3 and play Briggs and get Ravi to do a fair bit of support bowling.

Sri Lanka win the toss and will bowl. Briggs misses out for the Lions. Hildreth would also have bowled first.

Adams gone and Bopara comes in at three.

Hope there isn't a run out between Bopara and Taylor.

Bopara is apparently doing his best to get out in other ways, but he's still there on 16.

Out for 17. I sincerely hope Taylor gets a huge score here, forcing himself into the team for the First Test.

Makes you wonder why he persists with going in first drop. Like Bell he seems much better suited to number 5 or 6.

Hildreth out, bowled. 105-3. The fact I have to get this info from a fan on twitter at the ground is pretty sad - where are Sky or the BBC?

There was a similar comment on a BBC article today regarding the candidates to replace Collingwood. He needs to score quickly and 5 or 6 suits his counter-attacking style, whereas at 3 he tends to go into his shell, was the gist. My phone formatting meant I didn't see the name of the person commenting but it sounded like a member of the Essex coaching staff.

From Mike Selvey at Derby:

Both Geoff Miller and Andy Flower are here, but the squad has already been selected apparently and nothing that happens in this game will make any difference to that.
I know we're in the era of established pecking orders for both batsmen and bowlers - but sometimes it's worth letting someone jump the queue. They did that with Finn when he came into the team, after all.
