I can try and answer that for you.

In 2006 he only began playing in late august.

In 2007 we dominated the 2nd division for quite a number of matches (the first 10, in which he played most) so only batted once. 14 matches - 20 innings (2007) only 37 runs short of a 1000. It also didn't help that despite being the best batsmen in the side at the time, he was dropped in may to make way for the returning Fleming which knocked him back quite a bit. He was not the same player for the rest of the season.

In 2008 it was simply a poor conversion rate (he has caught from M Wagh) and kept getting out after getting to 50 combined with being a red inker in a few too many collapses. He regularly faced the new(ish) ball too due to our woeful openers. Again only 23 short. 13 matches 21 innings.

Not a complete mystery GBG. But good point to raise.

What should this suggest?

"There aren't that many good signings to be had. Ali Brown's destructive and Jason Brown's come from Northampton as a back-up for me and Graeme Swann.

"He's got a great record in one-day cricket. So we should be able to play three spinners at Trent Bridge this year."

As well as the new recruits, Patel, who has played 11 ODIs for England so far, is also joined by a more familiar face at Trent Bridge this season.

Younger brother Akhil, 18, has recently been handed a contract by Nottinghamshire, and Samit admits the prospect of two Patel's representing England would be fantastic.

"He's just got a contract at Notts. Whether he can break into the first team just depends on how we go but I think he'll find it easier than I did," he said.

"If he performs, then I think he might crack it. Hopefully we'll end up playing for England together."

Samit Patel has been told by his Nottinghamshire coach, Mick Newell, that he ought to be embarrassed by his continuing lack of fitness, having been omitted from England's 15-man squad for the ICC World Twenty20 almost two months after he was served a warning about his weight by being withdrawn from England's one-day tour of the Caribbean.

"He was told once and he obviously hasn't taken enough notice, so he needs to take a lot of notice this time," Newell told BBC Radio. "It's embarrassing really, from his point of view, to be left out twice for the same reason."

The last I heard was Patel was in the gym twice a day. I don't think it is any good saying it is his body shape because you can still be chunky and fit. It's probably not being able to pass the bleep test.

I suppose you can go the gym twice a day and just sit in the cafe for most of it

You certainly can, but only if the cafe has a view of the pool and jacuzzi.

Maybe Samit just doesn't care and is happy the way he is.

I don't get this fitness malarkey, what exactly is 'fit'? Are bleep test results the be all and end all? Do cricketers need to be as fit as Lance Armstrong?

I watched Patel fielding directly infront of us at Headingley last year and he looked in pretty good shape to me. Compared to Patel, Rob Key is mahusive and Bresnan, who has got more chins than a Chinese phonebook has got bigger boobs than the missus. Me no understand.

I think there is a basic standard which Harmison just seemed to pass the last time he was tested. Other people under the spotlight were Prior and Bell.

Atherton said "Bresnan has a more oldfashioned build, carrying as he does a hefty bowler's backside" but I was more amused by Derek Pringle's comment that Bresnan was built like a brick privy.

To be fair Bres has always been a big unit and even at his thinnest carries an extra chin. That said he did look a tad overweight in the Championship opener, coming in to bowl his sweater was bouncing around like Jordan's on a trampoline and the odd eye witness report suggested the Yorkshire bowlers as a whole appeared to be sagging towards the end of the days play.

I'm very dissapointed there's no recall for Samit Patel in the T20, mainly because, fat or not, he's a far better cricketer than Eoin Morgan.

I see that Newell has had words about Patel for failing to improve his fitness.

To name but one. To me, this whole thing reflects extremely badly on the ECB. Patel will have a great season, Notts will win the championship, and England will probably continue underachieving in a way that is only to be expected when they don't pick their best players. Patel gets eggs in his mouth, and the top brass get them on their faces and all the way down their ties.

LOL

I'm very high on Samit Patel's talent, he may be a better cricketer than Morgan but I don't think you can call him a far better cricketer than Morgan because Morgan is very talented, it's just a shame he isn't English (or Welsh).

Or alternatively it is another England reject who leads his county to retain the championship?
